Looking for information abt my ggrandmother, Mary Harty, who came from Limerick to USA abt 1850. Born  abt 1824 to Michael and Mary (Sheedy) Harty (Hartey).  I have no knowledge of any other family members.  Any help will be much appreciated.

I looked at Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie  and found an 1816 baptismal record for a Mary Harty born to Michael and Mary in the Ballybricken/Bohermore RC parish. No surname was shown for the mother. Also found a Margaret born to the same parents in 1820 in Ballybricken and there were five other Harty children baptized between 1814-1834 to a Michael and Mary but I did not check the parish. This may be a different Harty family particularly since you have 1824 for her date of birth.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

Many of the Co. Limerick parishes have records going back to 1820, however, a good number start later. There is always the possibility that your Mary was baptized in a church with later records.

I don't know if her father lived until 1850 but below are the five Michael Hartys listed in the 1850 Griffiths Evaluation head of household listing for Co. Limerick. (The townland is after Michael).

  • There are baptisms some likely younger siblings to your Mary showing on the Index at RootsIreland, these are matching on parents names. The parish is Mainster RC and the dates are between 1829 and 1838.

Mary seems to have been born slightly before the records, which on RootsIreland run from 1828,  with some gaps. I'll check for other references to the parish, e.g. NLI Index, Ryans etc and reply here...

The parish is located in Co. Limerick and south of the city near Croom.

  • Ryan's confirms dates for Mainster RC parish, going back to about 1826. The NLI has two separate films one titled 'Fedamore (Manister)' and covering dates between 1826 and 1833, and a second 'Manister & Fedamore' covering 1833 onward. Seems like there was some reorganising of the parish over the years.

Fedamore a separate parish to the north, and has records back to abt 1807.

The children I found on the index where Honora 1829, Michael 1831, Patrick 1834 and John 1838. Mother's name is showing as a Maria, so a Latinized version

apologies Roger for cross-posting earlier, didn't see your search details and reply when I started my reply above...

  • Shane:

No problem. Two replies are better than none. Also, you probably have the better information.

  • The equivilant civil parish for Mainster RC was Monasteranenagh, and there are some details of the parish that might be of interest listed in Lewis 1837 Topagraphical Dictionary, so around that time that the younger children were born - see :  Manister or Monaster-Nenagh

The civil parish is listed as Monasteranenagh on the Tithes, which seem to be dated about 1821 for this area, but no sign that I spotted, of any Harty, Sheedy, or similar, holding Tithable agricultural land at that time.

  • I have been away from this site for a bit and am so thankful for your replies. I will pursue these leads; hopefully they will work out. I am hoping to be in Ireland next spring/summer and will be anxious to visit these areas.
Again, my sincere (but late!) thanks for your helpful comments and research!
