Hello.  I'm searching for any information on my G-G-grandparents.  The father's name is James Smith.  His obituary and census records for 2 sons many years later indicate they came from Limerick.  In the US, he was in the cattle business.

Census records for all 5 known sons indicates that both parents and all boys were born in Ireland.  James Sr's obituary says he came over to the States about 1857, but other records indicate his youngest son was born about 1861.  Thus, I would guess they emigrated sometime between 1857 - 1865.  I have not been able to find them in the 1860 census, and earliest record I can find is in 1868, in Albany, NY.

Here's what I know about the family:

James Sr., born about 1819

Jennie or Jane, maiden name possibly Norton, possibly born about 1823 but info on her is very limited.  The 1870 census lists her as 40, the 1875 census lists her as 50, and she is listed as 58 when she died in 1880.  Thus, her birth year could be anywhere between 1822 and 1830.

Thomas, born about 1853
Patrick, born about 1855
James, born about 1857 (my g-grandfather)
John, born about 1860
Robert, born about 1861

Stories passed down through the generations say they came over on a cattle boat.  They were Roman Catholic.

Thank you for any assistance.

I searched the Roots Ireland indexes and found the following Smith baptismal records in the Adare RC church records. The parents were James and Johanna.

    Thomas 1852 Patrick 1854 James 1857 John 1859 and Robert 1862

Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. I would search the Adare records at that time to see if they provide the townland where the family lived.

  • Thank you!!!   I have search IrishGenealogy several times for them, but the Limerick records are not there yet.  I do not have a subscription to Roots Ireland, so I really appreciate your efforts.  I am anxiously awaiting the National Library records.  I'm sure hope their servers can handle the traffic!
