Hello, I am trying to find out or trace my family history.

Looking for Information on Thomas Byrnes, born 1816 Limerick Ireland, Shipped to Australia in 1936/37 on the Ship St Vincent, died in Goulburn NSW Australia in 16 February 1863.  Married to Catherine Dwyer on 3 May 1945 in Goulburn Australia. I think Thomas's Fathers name was Richard Byrnes and his mother was Margaret Connolly, both born in Ireland, but location unknown.

Catherine Dwyer (Thomas Byrne's wife) was born in 1825 in Castletownarra, Tipperary, Ireland, died in Goolagong NSW Australia in 16 July 1892. I believe her parents to be Patrick Dwyer, Born in 1804 in Youghal, Cork, Ireland, died in Hartley NSW Australia in 10 February 1875 and her mother Sarah Carey born in 1805, County,Tipperary, Ireland, died in Hartley NSW Australia in 6 July 1861. Patrick Dwyer and Sarah Carey were married in 1825 in Ireland.

I hope this information will help, I have looked everywhere I can think of and cannot find any further information.  My aunt said that one of our family members had traced the family history back to the surname being O'Byrnes, but that history was lost when the family member passed away and no-one seems to know what happened to it.

Any help would be most appreciated and thank you for your time in advance.

Kind Regards

Michelle Walker (nee Byrnes)

  • Hi Michelle,

I've had a look on www.rootsireland.ie but didn't have a lot of luck.

There is a marriage listing of a Patrick (not Richard) Byrne marrying a Margaret Connolly in 1814 in Wexford. This is a pay site so you'd need to pay for the record but they have a 40% off deal at the moment.

There is also a birth of Thomas Byrne in Wicklow in 1816 mother Margaret but father not Patrick!

I couldn't find any relevant Dwyer or Carey births or marriages listings on rootsireland.

The marriage of Thomas Byrne and Catherine is on the NSW BDM site.

If you were to purchase the certificate it should have places of birth and parents' names on it.

The certificates cost $31 but you can get a transcription agent to send the details for half that.

The agents are listed on the site. I've used Turtle before.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Col,

Thank you for taking the time to have a look for me, it is most appreciated.

The Marriage for Patrick Byrnes and Margaret Connolly is probably correct and I only got the name Richard from a possible tree connection on Ancestry.com.

I have noticed in a lot of my research that the "S" is often left off the name or names are spelt differently on up to three different documents, which makes it hard to find people.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Regards

    Michelle

  • HI

Patrick Dwyer born in Youghal Cork- are you sure it was Youghal Cork and not in the parish of Youghalarra adjacent to Castletownarra. Youghalarra is often shortened to Youghal and Dwyer is a Tipperary name. The baptismal records for Castletownarra only commence in 1849. So you know where Patrick and Sarah Carey were married?

With reference to the Byrne/ Byrnes / O'Byrne name the original name is O'Byrne and most of the clan lived in Co Wicklow
