Looking for information of John Hurley and Elizabeth Dalton who were married in 1819 in the Roman Catholic Parrish of New Castle West. Witnesses to their marrieage were Jeremiah McCarthy and Roger Sweeney. The only recorded birth of this couple was Johanna b. in 1829. Her godparents were Cornelius Rourke and Ellen Lynch. My ggrandfather was Martin Hurlely b. in 1822 and he emigrated to U.S. in the 1840's. He made three trips to the CA gold fields and later settled in Va (now WV). Any info on these persons would be appreciated.

Hello there WV Mounty:
Jane has asked me to have a look at your message with a view to seeing if we can locate you some relative or give you an insight to any local knowledge. I would be interested to learn if you have any idea where Martin Hurlely b. in 1822 was before emigrating to the States. Also you may know where Johanna b. in 1829 was actually born? You may e-mail me directly at killeedy1@Irelandxo.com
Cheers
Jennifer Jean

hello WVMonty
I cannot see any record of your gt grandfather's birth but will visit the church in Newcastle West shortly, the priest there is good and is often there in the weekdays. I did find the confirmation of Joanna however and of her sponsors. Jeremiah became a teacher and is listed in Ashes Limerick & Clare directory 1891-92 also he shows in Guys Directory of Munster 1893 The Griffiths Valuation shows John Hurley as having land rented from the Earl of Devon but his Landlord is Cornelius Crimmins; the house, office and gardens is in Ballinena which was under the Barony of Glenquin in the Newcastle Parish (I live a very short distance away) this was in 1799. The Dalton family shows in Dooally which is in the same area but a short way off. Martin has land, offices and house in Churchtown which again is in Glenquin area. I have sent you a photo that I took of Glenquin which is great order and well looked after over the years.
I will hope to visit the graveyeard too which might help you with your search

Jennifer, Thank you for this information. I really appreciate it. I found a scrap of paper with an address in Ballinena on it, so know this is my family. I would appreciate any other info you can give me.

Hi WV Monty,
This is a later generation but my father was called John Hurley born 1920 in Ballinena the eldest of seven (3 sisters , 3 brothers). His father was Maurice Hurley and his mother was called Johanna, he was brought up on a farm in Ballinena and my extended family still live there. My father left Ireland in the early fifties and settled in London, he only returned to Ireland when visiting family. When he passed away at nearly 90 his ashes were buried within the grave of his mother and father in Newcastle West and the gravestone is now inscribed with his name.
I don't know if there is a connection to the earlier generations.

Sharon,
Thanks for the info on your family. Since the familes both came from Ballinena and both were named John, there is a possible connection. My grandfather was named William Hurley. Just wondering if you have that name in your family. He was a son of Martin Hurley. The only two children of that family are Martin and Johanna. I guess all the other records were destroyed. Thank you for taking the time to let me know this information as it is really difficult finding info from that long ago.--------Martha

Hi Martha,
I don't have any information as my father did not pass on any details about his family tree. However, I have visited Ballinena a couple of times and it is a very small hamlet (set in a beautiful valley) so I would assume some sort of family connection is likely. Last year I attended a 90th birthday celebration for my uncle in Ireland and my cousin mentioned that a family tree for the Ballinena Hurley's does exist. I would be happy to pass on your details to my cousin if you wanted me to.
Best wishes Sharon F ( nee Hurley)
