I am editing an extensive journal of a visit to Doon and Pallasgreen in 1912-13 of Philip J. Ryan, half-brother of James Ryan "Hosey" of Reenavanna, Doon, and his wife Sarah Rowles Ryan. I have been able to identify almost all of the relatives that they visited but I need to identify some places and I would love some help. Some of the spellings are hard to decipher. Help me if you canHere is an example:
"Tues, Jan. 21, 1913: [Sarah] Uncle Jim, Papa, Ed Gorman, Pat Hanley & Mrs. Hanley, Nora and Edmund Ryan and myself went out to Aunt Maggie's for dinner. (Beary, at Barna). We drove by Pallas and by Cashel Duff. (Kilduff?) There is quite a lot of the wall standing there yet. Then we drove out to the Cemetery and visited Grandma's grave, and drove to Aunt Maggie's place. When driving we were by a hill, not much larger than a big barn. They call it the Mote of Pallas. (What is this?)
Then we got to Aunt Maggie's place and had dinner. Ed Gorman and Pat Hanley (of Doon) walked 1 1/2 miles to the rock of Balaereta [spelling?] and Ed got up and stood on it and brought a little piece of the rock with him. There is a fine church built there. (what church?) We could see it plain from Pallas.
When they got back, we went home. We went to Pat Hanley's for a little time and Mary Beary, Nora and Ed Gorman walked to Uncle Jim's place. Then we had supper and went to Jim Ryan (Hosey's) place where they had a dance and stayed till morning."

Hi Ann,
The road Junction in Barna is known ar "Beary's Cross" so likely Aunt Maggie Beary's home was located at the Junction. Castle Duff = Kilduff Castle, substantial 5 storey castle with just 2 gables standing. Mote / Motte / Moat was a man made Stone/Earth defensive structure. Balaereta = Ballyneety located there is "Sarsfields Rock" and Memorial to Lieutenant Sarsfield and the Battle / Siege of Limerick in 1691. The church in Templebraden located closeby was constructed in 1884.

My Magrath/McGrath and Real families came from the Pallas area (Ballynaclough). I thought you would be interested in this 1835 Limerick Star newspaper article about the Reals and Bearys.

ccreal - what a fascinating account! My husband's relative, Ellen Donegan, married James Real. They left Pallasgrean for Australia arriving Brisbane apprix 1850. We love the Pallasgrean area and are visiting again in July/August.

Ann I would live to help you with this! I could visualise exactly where you were talking about and gerlish has confirmed all my answers! Very interested in the Doon/pallasgreen connection as I had a Portley of Doon marry a Ryan from Pallasgrean. They then came to Australia and settled in Queensland.

Mary, I have been serching for a descendant of James and Ellen for many years. We believe James Real was a cousin to my Thomas Sarsfield Real. Your husband's James lived in Berna while my James lived in Ballynaclough. If you look at the wedding list for 1826 you will find both Thomas and Winifred along with James and Ellen are listed on the same page. I do know about Patrick Real becoming an associate justice of the Queensland Supreme Court. I am in contact with a woman, Karen Webster, from Brisbane who is a descendant on one of James' son who was mayor of Ipswich. We will be in the Pallasgrean area in June for a few days. staying with Real relation in Hospital (where most of the Irish Reals settled) except those who remained in Pallas or those like my ancestors who lived in Oola. Then we are on to Dungarvan, Waterford for the McGrath Clan Gathering. My Email address is: creal@cox.net

I know I've joined this conversation very late. My name is Liam Beary, my dad was Daniel Beary and we were both born in London. My grandfather was Daniel Beary and his father was Thady Beary who were both born in the Barna area of Pallas green and my grandmother Alice Nihill was born in mount Minnett according to her birth certificate.
