Hello!

I am looking for information on the families (2) that lived at Beechmont Demense outside of Rathkeale town.

The elder Michael O'Halloran died(60 years of age) at Beechmont in Dec. 1889 according to the burial record at St Lawrence Cem in Limerick. His son, also Michael O'Hallloran was bapised in Manister/Croom 15 Dec 1852. We think the elder Michael came from Clare or so the family legend says.

We know that the younger Michael O'H and his wife Mary Fitzgibbon were married 31 July 1877 at Fedamore RC Church and indicated that Michael lived at Garryellen, Croom parish. These two had a child James who was forn and died at Beechmont April of 1890. This couple and children lived at Beechmont on the 1901 census. By 1911 census, they lived on Main Street Rathkeale where they ran a public house.

We are trying to trace the elder Michael O'H back to Clare. His wife was Margaret Cooney baptised in Manister 04-Oct 1833. The elder Michael would have been born approximately in 1829 - we think in Clare.

So, we have O'Hallorans living at Beechmont in Dec 1889 (the elder), 1890 (baby James born and died) and 1901 census(the younger Michael and Mary Fitz and children.

Our peope were the caretakers/stewards who lived in the guardhouse. I believe the owners at the time were the Lloyds.

Are there any estate records? Is there any way to located the birth place of the elder Michael?

Thanks!

  • Hi Eliza

Apologies for the long delay in getting back to you.

There are estate papers available for some big houses in Ireland in various places. You can check the National Library of Ireland sources database of any potentially useful ones here:

    http://sources.nli.ie/

Have you already checked out rootsireland.ie (a subscription site) and familysearch.org to see what baptisms you can locate for the elder Michael - it may be a guessing game though depending on what you can find. Clare Local Studies site is also great for anyone with Clare ancestors:
