Hi, my Ebzery Family have been quite well-researched (ancestry.com.au) but we only have a 'hunch' that they may have been huguenots. Noone so far has produced any concrete evidence. I would love to know how we could prove or dispove this suggestion.

  • Is Ebzery a derived from another French sounding name? Lists of Huguenot names are available online, as are the movements of such groups into Ireland, via England or Holland etc. Atisans and Craftsworker Trades are also helpful hints.

  • Hi Col, I have tested with a number of companies and I do show up as 15% French/German or similar ....so there is some supporting evidence.

  • Hi Roisin,

I have looked at lists on line and Ebzery is not one that appears in the lists although very similar names do. I haven't thought of  looking at trades to help me but in Ireland they were farmers  thx janine

  • Hi Janine

Have you seen some of the very early records that mention the name Ebzery?

e.g., Philip Ebzery, Commission of the Peace for County Cork, 1654; his marriage (on ancestry and familysearch.org) in Derry Cathedral, Londonderry in 1656; marriage of John Ebzery same place in 1657; in 1657 George Williams and Isabell Nevin married in Derry, George being described as a soldier under the command of Lt Col. Phillip Ebzery. Phillip was in the Regiment of Sir Hardress Waller, who was sent to Ireland in 1650 as part of Cromwell's invasion force. Another document says Phillip had land in Westmeath

This places the Ebzery's in Ireland earlier than the Revocation of Nantes in 1685, which is the date usually suggested for the main impetus for the emigration of Huguenots from France, even though there were some earlier immigrants.

There was also a marriage between Benjamin Ebzery and Matha Langton at Cloyne, County Cork in 1698.

So, even though our ancestors (that we can trace directly) hailed from Shangolden, it appears there were Ebzerys in other counties before this

    regards, Louise (your NSW cousin)

  • Just FYI, RootsIreland.ie has 55 Ebzery births. 1 is in Co Derry, the rest in Co Limerick. They have 30 marriage rcds. 1 is in Co Derry, the rest in Co Limerick. 4 burial rcds are all in Co Limerick. 10 census rcds are all in Co Limerick. Griffith's has 1 Ebzery entry, and it's in Co Limerick.
