Hello,

'm looking for any information on Patrick Joseph Garvey who was a Guarda Sargeant in Shanagolden until his death in 1964. He married Mary O'Donnell in 1935 and they had two sons and a daughter together.

Thank you

Margaret

    Margaret,

Attached is their civil marriage record...looks like they were both from Cork. The witnesses could possibly be their siblings.

  • Carolyn,

Based on the marriage record Carolyn provided, Patrick's father's name was Michael. Looking at his death record on Irishgenealogy (free website) he was born about 1902. There are several trees on Ancestry that suggest that his parents were Michael Garvey and Ellen Fox. Ellen died in 1902.

    Name Patrick Joseph Garvey
    Baptism Age 0
    Birth Date 29 May 1901
    Baptism Date 30 May 1901
    Baptism Place Armagh, Armagh, Ireland
    Father Michael Garvey
    Mother Ellen Fox

Not sure if this is your Patrick. I assume in the military he was transferred to different locations.

Some probate abstracts from the PRONI wills website. The wills themselves should be in PRONI in Belfast, in paper format.

He drowned at Warrenpoint in July 1936 trying to save the life of a Miss Elizabeth Mulholland who had got into difficulties when swimming. The article reported that the family home in Ballyrath was often searched by Crown forces who persecuted the family.

Sergeant Patrick Joseph is recorded in the Irish Independent. He is recorded as being a native of Kilmihil, Co. Clare and was 61 years of age.

He was a noted athlete and had been in Shanagolden for 30 years.

  • Dear McCoy, Carolyn, Mary, and Elwyn,

Thank you so much for the information you have provided me with and so very quickly. I will take some time to review it. I have a question about Patrick's service with the IRA - would he have served at the age of 15 in 1916?

    Thank you all once again,

    Margaret

  • Margaret,

I attach a copy of the relevant page in relation to the death of Sergeant Patrick Joseph Garvey on December 6th 1964 in Shanagolden. - Irish Independent dated December 7th 1964 - Page 13 - Column 2

In regard to service in the IRA, the record is in relation to the years 1916 to 1922, so he could have become a member in any those of those years.

  • Margaret,

I attach a copy of the 1911 Irish Census for Cahermurphy - Kilmihil, Co. Clare. It may be the family you are seeking?

You will find it North of the village of Kilmihil.
