I am hoping that someone out there could also be related to this person - Michael Kiernan!! And if there is, I would be ever so grateful to hear from them.

Michael Kiernan was my Great Grandfather, although I never knew him. He married Catherine Cheevers in 1906. She came from Mayne, Coole Parish, in Co Westmeath. Her parents were William Cheevers and Bridget Cooke. It was Catherine’s second marriage. Her first husband was James Beglan. James died in 1903.
Catherine and Michael lived in Killashallow, Boherquill, Co Westmeath. They had one child together in that marriage, a daughter named Bridget. Bridget married Thomas Fagan.  From the 1911 Census Ireland, it states that Michael was born in Co Longford.
Michael’s father was James Kiernan. Because the Marriage Certificate of the time didn’t ask for the Mother’s name, I don’t know who she was.

I would be most grateful for any information on the above person please.

The marriage record shows that Michael Kiernan was from Coolnagun townland which is in Street civil parish in Co. Westmeath. I went back to the 1901 census for Coolnagun and there was a Michael Kiernan who was a farm servant in another household. That form showed he was born In Co,.Westmeath.

The subscription site Roots Ireland had one lead in Co. Longford and one lead in Co. Westmeath for a Michael Kiernan with father James.

Michael Kiernan baptized February 20 1859 Colmcille RC parish father James Kiernan mother Mary Hanlon.

Michael Kiernan baptized September 5 1852 in Collinstown RC parish. Father James Kiernan and mother Judith Cullen.

  • The 1901 census notes that Michael was 40...thus, born c. 1861.

The 1911 census notes he was 56... thus born c. 1855.

Do you have any other sources giving his birth year? They might help figure out which of the baptismal records mentioned by Roger is the correct one.

  • Dear Roger,

Thank you for taking the time to follow up on my query re - Michael Kiernan.
I have noticed from your website “ Ireland XO” that many of you are giving up your time as Volunteers to carry out the research, so a BIG thank you. You do an amazing job!
Yes, I see what you mean - the Irish Census 1901, re - Michael Kiernan, where it states that he was born in Co Westmeath, but in the 1911 it states that Michael was born in Co Longford. It sure seems to be the same Michael, because of the age difference between 1901 and 1911. I don’t know anyone of the “Kiernan”

family name to ask,  therefore have nothing to go on. I am aware that many mistakes have been made especially in the 1901 Census Ireland with regards to

the AGES of people. That could possibly be of the fact that many people didn’t actually know how old they were, because generally families didn’t celebrate BIRTHDAYS.

Once again Roger, thank you for helping out. Hopefully some relative on the KIERNAN side of the family may see my message and get in touch.

    Kind regards,

    Maire

  • Dear Patricia,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query re - my Great Grandfather Michael Kiernan. From your website “ IRELAND XO” I am aware that much of the research for people seeking information on their lost relatives is  carried out by VOLUNTEERS, so a BIG thank you Patricia. Much appreciated!

I honestly don’t have anything to go on with regard to Michael, other than his MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE, which I found on the website: civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie  Had his CERTIFICATE given a “KIERNAN”  surname as one of the witnesses for Michael and Catherine’s marriage, that would have been a great help. However the Witnesses for their marriage were John Gilsenan and Catherine Fagan. Their marriage was in the Catholic Church of Boherquill.
There might be a possible mention of a “ KIERNAN” family name on their daughter’s Baptismal Record and I am referring to the CHURCH RECORDS of Boherquill, Co Westmeath, Patricia, not the CIVIL RECORDS. The Civil Records don’t give the Baptismal Sponsors. So often the Sponsors were relatives, as I read on your website some time back.

As mentioned above they had one child together, a daughter named Bridget, who was born 23/ 07/ 1907 ( Registrar’s District: Granard/ Street No.1 Co Westmeath ). If I were living in Ireland, I could visit the Parish Priest in Boherquill to ask him to view the Baptismal Records for Bridget Kiernan, but alas, I live in Australia.
So according to Roger’s findings, there was a Michael Kiernan ( whose father was James Kiernan ) born in Co Westmeath in 1852 and one born in Co Longford in 1859.
Well hopefully a KIERNAN ( or perhaps a “ HANLON,” as mentioned by

Roger )  family member  might read our articles and possibly get in touch, Patricia!! If so, it would be absolutely wonderful!

Once again Patricia thank you for helping out.
    Kind regards,

    Maire
