  • Valerie:

The two townlands are Urbalreagh and Magheryard in Clonca parish. I checked the 1901 census www.nationalarchives.ie There were a number of McLaughlin and McGonaghle families in Urbalreagh. There were also McLaughlin families in Magheryard. I did not find Thomas, Catherine or Donald so perhaps they had died before 1901.

  • Hi Valerie,

I found records of Lochias although he was called Loughlin McLaughlin and your grandmother Mary Ann but not Margaret.

I found a Donald McLaughlin aged 75 living in Ardmalin although I can't be sure that he is the Donald that you mention.

I can give you a few websites to check out and maybe contact -

    Clonmany Genealogy - http://www.clonmany.com/genealogy/ and https://www.facebook.com/clonmany.genealogy?fref=ts

    Donegal Genealogy Resources - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/

    McLaughlin Clan - http://clanmaclochlainn.com/

I wish you all the best with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Eimer Shea

  • Thanks for the information about Lochias (Loughlin) McLaughlin, where were the records found?  I would like to review the records myself if I can.

Donald McLaughlin age 75 may  be the third or fourth Doanld as the one on my grandmother's birth certificate (1864) would obviously be dead.  I appreciate all the help and again thank you.

  • Sorry, I completely forgot to say where I found the record.

It is a site called Roots Ireland.  You have to register and it is a pay per view service.  You can search for free but to see the record costs 25credits.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you Elmer for the information about Roots Ireland.  I'll check out McLaughlin there.

Do you think I could have a contact for Donald McLaughlin so I could speak/e-mail to him and find out if he is related to my grandmother b. 1864?   A Donald McLaughlin (in 1864 from Magherard) was a witness to her birth.

The Donald McLaughlin who was mentioned in your response message is presently 75 years old he may be a member of the past family.

    Regards, Valerie

  • Dear Valerie,

I really don't know where my head was when I was writing the first message not telling you where I found the records!

The Donald that I found was on the 1901 census and that's why I thought he might be the Donald mentioned as an informant on the birth cert you have.  He was 75 in 1901 so his age may fit.  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Ardmalin/Culoort/1184351/

There are 3 Donald's on the 1911 Census but they are all younger so the Donald from the 1901 census must have died between 1901 and 1911  - http://tinyurl.com/c8cp8tp

You should get in contact with Clonmany Genealogy as they hae a really good record and Clonmany is not too far away from the area that you mention.

Again, I apologise for the confusion that I caused.

    Regards,

    Eimer Shea
