Hi,
I am searching for information in Ireland about John Crawford born 1849 Granard, County Longford and his wife, Margaret O'Reilly/Reilly born about 1849.
I have their emigration to Australia in 1883 and death records.
The children born in Ireland are: Margaret in 1875
Ellen b 8 June 1876
Catherine "Kate" b 3 December 1877
Annie b 1880
Mary Jane b 1883
I don't have marriage record for John and Margaret.
John's death record has his parents as William Crawford and Margaret Coyle.
Thankyou,
Katja

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

John Crawford and Margaret Reilly we're married July 21 1873 in the RC church in Abbeylara. John was 25 and from Abbeylara. Margaret was 26 and from Renehan. The father of John was William who was a trader.

  • Hi Katja:

I'm going to pass this query to one of our Longford volunteers who may be able to assist you.

The Roots Ireland database is a subscription website, but the records that you are looking for are probably in the NLi parish registers for Granard which are available online through the library.  For ease of reference, here is the register for Granard and you will note that their dates are quite far back which is good for research.

     https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0167

You will also find civil births and marriage records from 1864 on the Irish Genealogy website.  The link that was given above did not direct for some reason, so I have attached a snipped copy for you.

As you probably know, baptisms will give the sponsors and you can use the NLI website and the link for searching.  I will leave the reply to Annette for her local experience as she will direct you further.

    Stay safe and well.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane,
Thankyou so much for all this. I have had so much wonderful assistance from everyone at Ireland Reaching Out.
I tell other people of your site and amazing results from the researchers/genealogists.
I have created findagrave records for John and Margaret Crawford (nee O'Reilly) and created or edited their children's findagrave links.
This will make the Australian part of the family line easy for anyone looking for them.
    Thankyou,
    Have a wonderful weekend,.
    Kind Regards,
    Katja

The subscription site Roots Ireland did not have baptismal records in Abbeylara in the 1840s for John Crawford. There was an August 27 1843 record in Ardagh and Moydow parish with parents James Crawford and Rose Mullen Also, a May 10 1846 record in Clonguish RC parish parents James Crawford and Rachael Gray.

The earliest Margaret Reilly baptismal record in Abbeylara was in 1854 which is likely too late for someone who was 26 in 1873 when she married.  There were many Margaret Reilly baptismal records in other parishes in Co. Longford so without her parents names, we can't tell determine if any of these records apply to your Margaret.

I just remembered that the 1873 civil marriage record showed Peter as Margaret's father. I searched again and the only Margaret Reilly baptismal record with father Peter in the 1840s was April 13 1845 parents Peter Reilly and Mary Nexon in the Mullinalaghta RC parish.

  • Hi Roger,
The information for Margaret's parents were those given by her son-in-law at time of death so may have been incorrect as her mother's surname was unknown. First name Margaret.
    Enjoy your day,
    Kind Regards,
    Katja
