Have you tried searching Church records for information? Most Catholic records are held locally. One website which may be helpful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Kilcommock/Kilcomoge parish follow this link:

For Church of Ireland records check http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

You could also try searching Family Search for records. This is a huge database of genealogical records compiled by the Church of the Latter Day Saints. It includes records of marriages and births in the pre-1871 period (incomplete). You can search these here:

Have you looked at the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century for record of either John Snr. or Jnr.? There are two:

The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1838) found at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

and Griffith?s Valuation (1848-18664) found at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/     

You could also try looking into his RIC records. Excellent personnel records were kept from 1816. These can be found at the UK National Archives here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/royal-irish-constabulary.htm .

There are microfilm copies at the National Archives of Ireland, The Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). For each recruit it includes a brief service record, date of marriage and wife's native county, and the name of the individual who recommended him.

There is a book by Jim Herlihy called, The Royal Irish Constabulary: a complete alphabetical list of officers and men, 1816-1922, 1999. This supplies the Service Number needed to use the Registers quickly and easily.

Do you know much about their emigration? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information -and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin. There are lots of books and documents available about the Irish emigration to NZ. There is a website you could look at: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/irish/2 for information about the Irish in New Zealand.
