Hi

I am seeking details of the Soorley/Sorley famiy of Longford.  My 3 x great grandparents Hugh Sorley (b c1810) and Catherine Lynch married in the Catholic Church in Killoe, Longford in 1829.  They had at least two children:  my 2 x great grandmother Mary Sorley baptised about 1830 Balinalee and Ann baptised in the same area in 1834.

Hugh died in in may 1881 in the Grandard Workhouse with Catherine dying in the same workhouse in 1883.

Mary is said to have married Edward Morris from Cavan around 1862(?).  They had at least 4 children:

  • Terence baptised November 1862 in Balinallee;
  • Patrick baptised July 1865 in Clonbroney;
  • Catherine (Kate) born January 1868 in Aughaward, Ballinalee, Longford; and
  • Edward born Balinallee in 1870.

The family emigrated to the Colony of Queensland on the "Almora" and arrived in Rockhampton in August 1882.

I would love to find family in Ireland or elsewhere.

  • Dear Marg,

    Thank you for your enquiry. You have done much of the work already.

    To clarify the places: Clonbroney is the Catholic parish that has Ballinalee village as its centre. There is a townland called Aughaward near to the village. Killoe parish borders Clonbroney parish. Granard is a town in north Longford, quite close to Ballinalee.

    The fact that the marriage took place in Killoe suggests that Catherine Lynch was a native of that parish. Unfortunately, the Killoe parish records begin in 1826, and those of Clonbroney in 1828, so neither Hugh's nor Catherine's baptisms are recorded.

    I have checked the index to the Tithe Applotment Books for Longford, dating from 1823-'35, and cannot find any mention of Sorley or Soorley. That may indicate that the family did not hold any land. Tithe was a tax on land payable to the Church of Ireland.

    A later record, Griffith's Valuation, 1854, covers all property holders in the county and there is a Hugh Sorley in Aughaward. You can see the record at

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=Sorley&firstname=First+Name&countyname=LONGFORD&Submit.x=41&Submit.y=11

    I have checked the 1901 and 1911 censuses, as you have probably done yourself, but the name does not occur in either

    You could try writing to the Longford Leader, our local newspaper, outlining your information and asking if anyone knows anything. The email is newsroom@longford-leader.ie.
