My ancestor, Thomas Cox, is listed as coming from Logan Parish in County Longford. I can't find a Logan Parish in this county and wonder if anyone knows if there ever was a Logan Parish in Longford, or if this is a mistake. His wife was Mary Donnelly. Thomas was born in 1785-9 and Mary in 1800, both in County Longford. They left for NY, USA around 1830. I hope someone will be able to help with this!

  • Dear Jan,

Thank you for your message. The parish you are looking for is Legan, which is located in south Co. Longford, not far from the border with Westmeath. Unfortunately, there are no birth, marriage or death/burial records until 1855, which is late. However, there is a record of land, the Tithe Applotment Book, for that parish (known then as Kilglass), dating from 1824. It lists all holders of land who had to pay tithe, a tax, to the Church of Ireland (Anglican).

The following are the Cox names included, followed by the townland in which they were:

    George in Kilglass

    Hugh and Michael in Aughnasillagh

    John in Garrycam

    Michael and son in Corcorkey

It is possible that one of them is Thomas's father. Is there any way of getting his name from US sources?

    Kind regards,

    Martin Morris

  • Hello, Martin,

Thank you so very much for your reply. I will investigate those Cox names that you provided to see if I can find a family link. Legan! That explains a lot. I'm sorry to hear there aren't records until 1855.  I really appreciate all of this information. I think Ireland Reaching Out is a fantastic service. Hope to speak with you again.

Your Thomas Cox is my 3rd great grandfather via his son Jamrs Andrew.  I also had Logan parish, Co. Longford for him.  Have you found any information on his parents?

    Martin -

Thank you so much for this information.
