Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
When are you headed to Ireland? Can you provide more specifics about Thomas Steel e.g. names and dates etc.

Thank you. We will be in Ireland August 23-September 5. John Steel was born in County Longford June 24, 1786. He arrived in the US in 1928 originally settling in St. Albans, VT. He was married to Elizabeth Cronan. This was all pulled from an obituary when he died.

I noticed you posted in Mostrim parish. The records for the RC parish in Mostrim do not start until 1838. I found no baptismal or marriage record for John Steel on Roots Ireland.
The 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mostrim civil parish shows three Steel records. Possibly there is a connection to John. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/longford/mostrim.htm
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?
