Good morning!  My great grandfather's name was Peter Joseph Sharkey.  I believe he was born in the registration district of Ardee, but am not sure.  He was born between 1855 and 1860.  He was definitely from Louth.  His father was Peter Sharkey and his mother was Bridget Halpenny (or some variation thereof).  I have not been able to verify this or go back any farther than this.  I hope that this site can help me out and bring me farther back in my personal history as well as confirm what I already believe to be true.

Civil registration of births did not begin in Ireland until 1864.

Roots Ireland which is a pay site has a 1853 baptismal record for a Peter Sharkey born to a Peter Sharkey and a mother with the surname Halpenny.  www.rootsireland,ie  You may want to register and request the record. Possibly you will find other siblings and the parents marriage on Roots.
