My ancestors Thomas McBride (b1838) from Rampark and his wife Sarah Doherty (b1840) from Rockmarshall emigrated to Liverpool in 1870. Thomas's father was Arthur McBride, a fisherman who died aged 92 in Dundalk workhouse in 1879. I don t know if Arthur had any other children born before the Lordship parish register started in 1833 but no others are recorded in it. My 67 str y dna haplotype can be found at www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/mcbride/results .

Sarah was the eldest of 11 children born to Patrick Doherty and Bridget Rice between 1840 and 1864 in Rockmarshall. Her sisters Rose and Mary also emigrated to Liverpool and her brother Peter ended up in Bootle.

Her brother Michael , the youngest, inherited the farm in Rockmarshall when Bridget Doherty nee Rice died in 1901. It was in his possession till he died in 1948 (he left the farm and all his possesions to his great niece Brigid McDonald, his nephew James McDonald's daughter).

Another sister called Catherine married a blacksmith called Patrick O'Neill and ended up in Drogheda. They possibly retired to a farm in Mullacrew near Louth town.

Ann Doherty married Mathew McDonald and stayed in Rockmarshall.

Rose Doherty married William Gorman in St Augustines R.C. church Liverpool in 1879.

Peter Doherty married Ann Traynor of Jenkinstown in 1875. In the 1881 census they are living in Bootle. In the 1891 census Ann is a "widow" and living in Barton upon Irwell altough Peter actually died in Annaloughan in 1902. Ann had a sister called Margaret who went to live in Worcester Massachusetts and married Michael McGee.

Michael Doherty married Elizabeth Breen (AKA Maggie) and had two sons James and Patrick who appear in the 1901 and 1911 census.

Rockmarshall was mistakenly listed in the Griffiths valuation as being part of Annaloughan (Slievenaglogh was mistakenly recorded as being Rockmarshall)

Im interested to hear from anyone who is descended from these people and researching them.

  • Hi there,

Thank you very much for your query to Ireland Reaching Out. Do you have a marriage record for Thomas and Sarah? Do you know whent they got married or where? You could check the General Register Office (GRO) if you have some idea of this.

How do you know when they emigrated? Do you have any details of the ship or other records of this?

    What was their religion?

It migth be worth your while to contact Louth County Library to see if they have information about the workhouse in Dundalk. Also, local historical socities should be able to give you information about it.

You could also check the 1830 McCabe Drogheda Directory available at the National Library of Ireland Pos.3986. This may have some information about the fishing trade at that time.

Hope this is of some help to you.

    Kind regards,

    Sinead Cooney

  • Hi Sinead,

Thanks for advice. I ve been researching for quite a while (over 4 years) so I m pretty sure  I ve tracked down every record that exists regarding my direct ancestors in Ballymascanlan/Lordship. Im hoping to contact descendants of my Gx2 Grandmother Sarah Doherty's brothers and sisters.

Thomas and Sarah where married in late November 1869 in Ravensdale chapel (I have marriage certificate and catholic record) and their eldest Mary was born in Liverpool almost 9 months to the day later so Im fairly sure they emigrated new year 1870.

Hope Ireland XO catches on, its a good idea.

    Kind Regards

    Rob

  • Hi Robert

I have been researching in County Louth now for some 30 years specialising in HUGHES nanes and I have some 500 pedigrees on my files.

The name DOHERTY appears in several of my pedigree sheets. They were sponsors at Baptisms or witnesses at weddings.  Some of the names you mention are listed.

If you want to see the pedigree sheets kindly contacft me at          mandjhughes2@gmail.com
