My grandfather's grandfather was Robert Cooke born January 15, 1823 in Ballaghneed Townland, Clogher Parish, Tyrone County and immigrated to Canada where he died.  His father Robert Cooke was born 1788 in Ballaghmena and died in Ireland.

My grandmother's great grandfather was George Barr born in Clogher Parish (date of birth unknown) and immigrated to Canada where he died..  His father was William Barr or Dunbarr born in Clogher Parish and died in Ireland.

My questions are: can we find out where they are buried and visit the grave sites?  How would we go about finding out if we have an living relatives in Ireland.

    Below are the following:

A link to the 1859 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clogher parish showing an Andrew Cooke lived in Ballaghneed. Not sure how he was related to either Robert Cooke.

1901 and 1911 censuses- there was a Cooke family in Ballaghneed in both censuses. The head of household was Sidney in 1901. He died before 1911 and his son James was then the head of household.

A kink to the Anglican Diocese of Clogher. Perhaps you can make a contact and ask about the burial info.

The last link is a good site for researching in Co. Tyrone.

  • PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast has 3 probate files for Cookes from Ballaghneed. Two are on-line. The last is still in paper format and you would need to get a copy from PRONI (and that will only be the admin papers since he died intestate). However the last probate file indicates there were still Cookes in the townland in 1949.

    Here are the abstracts (summaries):

The Will of Andrew Cooke late of Ballaghneed County Tyrone Farmer who died 16 August 1885 at same place was proved at Armagh by Sidney Cooke of Ballaghneed Widow and Robert Long of Lislee Farmer both in said County the Executor. Effects ?289 0s. 6d.

Probate of the Will of Sidney Cooke late of Ballaghneed County Tyrone Widow who died 5 April 1901 granted at Armagh to James Cooke Farmer

You can view the two above wills via this link:

    http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/willsSearchResultsDetails.aspx

Cooke Fleet Strother of Ballaghneed county Tyrone farmer died 21 December 1948 at Clogher Hospital county Tyrone Administration Belfast 3 March to Emily Violet Cooke the widow. Effects ?4532 1s. 8d.

There are a couple of Cooke households (Alan & Robert) in the Ballaghneed area (ie Augher) on the current UK electoral roll (pay to view). Neither is listed in the current phone book (which is not unusual).
