Hello --
I am researching two Dundalk families -- the RICE family of Lisdoo, Dundalk and the DENIS HUGHES family of Seatown, Dundalk.
The Rice Family owned the Lisdoo House (which still exists as a pub/restaurant) in the 1800s/early 1900s. They also owned the cornstores across the Newry Road from the Lisdoo House pub; those structures still stand, although I don't know their use.
My gr-grandfather was PATRICK RICE (b. abt 1844); his father was PETER RICE (b. abt 1813). Patrick married Catherine (Katie) Hughes, daughter of Denis Hughes (a Dundalk butcher) and Eliza Henry. Their son, JAMES JOSEPH RICE, emigrated in 1904 and settled in Chicago.
Would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of either family history.
Best,
Judith Rice

Hi Judith,
Our volunteer, Barbara, has come back with the following:
There is a string on ancestry Ireland where all this research has already been done for the family by myself and another historian. Your emailer is more than welcome to pick what they want from it. if they just put in the names of the families all the data will just appear. Then, other links will pop up as they go along

Hi, Emma and Barbara --
Thank you SO much for getting back to me! Per Barbara's suggestion, I tried to access "Ancestry Ireland" but what comes up is a website for the Ulster Historical Foundation. There does not appear to be a string/thread to the information on the Rice/Hughes family. The majority of their records refer to counties in the North and most can only be accessed with a fee. Am I on the wrong website? If you can clarify this for me, I would be so appreciative!
Thank you, yet again!
Best,
Judith Rice

Hi Judith,
I think Barbara was referring to the Ireland section of Ancestry.com. She also said that you can sign up for a free trial which will allow you to see all the content. Here is a link to sign up page:
Here is a link to the family tree, but you may need to be signed in to see it:

hello,I hope you can help me.
My gtgt grandad,DENIS MAHON,b.c1837/8,Ireland,(we think maybe Galway)married my gtgt grandma,CATHERINE RICE,in 1861.,in St Oswalds RC Church.,Ashton in Makerfield.,Lancashire.,England.
I don't know very much about Catherine, more or less whats on her wedding cert. She was b.c1836/7.,her father was PETER RICE..
In the 1861 England Census,Denis was living in Lodge Lane.,Ashton in Makerfield.
Living in the same house as Denis, was MICHAEL RICE,age 22(B.c1839/40)[Catherines brother?]
Denis and Catherine had 4 children> JOSEPH,b.1st Jan 1862....................CATHERINE(my gt gran),b.16th Sep 1864.................PETER,b.16th Apr 1866..................ANN,b.13th,Mar 1868.
Catherine died on the 17th Mar 1868,4 days after giving birth to Ann.
Using the traditional way of naming children, first son,Joseph is named after Denis' father,Joseph Mahon.....first dau Catherine, named after Catherines' mother......second son named after Catherines' father,Peter Rice......second dau named after Denis' mother.
This gives me two sets of parents>Peter & Catherine Rice and Joseph & Ann Mahon.(this is supposition at the minute)
As you are looking for info on a Patrick Rice.,b.c1844,with parents Peter & Catherine,I wondered if you recognise my Catherine, and possibly Michael,as siblings of your Patrick?
Timewise,the ages fit.
Look forward to hearing from you.....I have spent almost three years trying to find just WHERE Catherine and Denis were from!
