To Rose Tucker,

My name is Patrick Mathews. I saw your post while looking for information on my great grandfather, Patrick Mathews. He may be the brother of James. My great grandfather was born in 1867, in Dundalk. I have almost no information on my family. I do know that my great grandfather's parent were John and Bridget (Finnegan) Mathews. My great grandfather emmigrated to New York city around 1890. He worked for Abraham and Strauss department store in Brooklyn till approximately 1925. He worked in the delivery stables. When the department store transitioned to motorized delivery truck he retired. He was married to Anne Hughes from Co. Armagh. On a side note, my grandfather, William, had a sister Rose.

  • Patrick and Roger,

I'm not sure who this email is going to but I would very much love to get in contact with Patrick.  I believe our great grandfathers were brothers.  My great grandfather James also worked at the stables for Abraham and Strauss.  I have been researching the family for a year now and have found some amazing information.  As far as I know, four of John and Bridget's eleven children came to the US in the early 1890's.  My great grandfather and his brother John married sisters, Margaret and Jane Breen.  Both couples are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn under the same gravestone.  A few rows away is the gravesite of your great grandparents Patrick and Anne and some of their children.  The fourth brother was Joseph who married Mary O'Neill.  Their youngest son, George was a fairly well known actor.  In my research I was also able to obtain birth certificates of some of Patrick and Anne's children; Peter, Mary, Joseph, Annie, Rose and Catherine.  I was also able to find an obituary notice from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle for their daughter Margaret.  Through Ancestry.com, I was also able to find the death information for William and Charles William.  Are they your grandfather and father?  I would love to share the information, I have found on the family and visit with you about what you know.  My name is actually Rose (Matthews) Stuker and my email is rosestuker@me.com.  I would love to know if you know anything about why some of the family in the grandparent generation went from one "t" to two "t's".  It seems like your branch kept the one "t" while the James and John families went to two "t's".  Hope to hear from you soon.
