Seeking information on the following surnames:
Quigley, Lane/Layne, McKenna, Bland, McGee, Matthews, Gernan and Connaghey.

My gggrandparents were James Quigley and Elizabeth Lane (sometimes spelt Layne) - they were married in the Catholic Diocese of Armagh RC Parish of Kilsaren, Co Louth on 7th November 1836 - their witnesses were John Gernan and mary Connaghey. The children I have managed to find are:
James (my g grandfather) Matthew, Ann (who married John McKenna of Co Louth) and William.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards Karen Kestigian

  • Hello Karen

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out site. I am the volunteer for the Drogheda area of Louth but I think I am the only active volunteer at this point.

Firstly Louth is a county in its own right but for church admin it is in the Diocese of Armagh. The Catholic marriage registers are online here but I note Kilsaran has gaps and I do not know why but you could also try the next door parishes and I get a lot of queries for Darver and it takes in Castlebellingham of which Kilsaran is almost a suburb. (they are both small but Castlebellingham is a town and further along the road is Kilsaran but if you were not aware you would think you were still in Castlebellingham, this is just in case some of the baptisms or marriages took place there. See http://registers.nli.ie/ Now without a date this is just a difficult read, however the website https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ has civil records which for catholics started in 1864 and church records are going up but not at great speed.

The name of the witness Gernan is usually spelled Gernon, there was a query on this name about a week ago in Darver parish next door but at the other side of Castlebellingham near Dundalk.

A site for Louth which will give you lists of names compiled from various sources is http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

The name Quigley is still found in the Dundalk region, on this site you can trace the names in the 1830s period if they held land and paid the tax. I see a Quigley address in 1830 and in the local phone book online at the address, scary.

    See http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

McKenna and McGee are also a common name in the area but Bland no trace. Connaghey I cannot find either but it has the look of a name that could be spelled many ways. You can search the above site by region or townland and may see the names or similiar near each other, in the one townland. Lane is also not found or Layne.

Between 1848 and 1864 a land survey was done and it has little maps, see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

I do see Lanes on this site in the area and a McBlane

Is it other children you are searching for and do you have an address for the people getting married.

It is late or early here now depending on your perspective but if you wish me to have a look for siblings or give you someother sites that may contain information let me know.

    Regards

    Pat

  • Dear Pat,

So many thanks for your reply. Most exciting. Members of the family and I have been trying for years to break down a huge brick wall. You are the first person to provide such an incredible amount of possibilities and avenues of investigation. I did write to a Catholic Church in Kilsaran some years ago but received no reply. Given your sound advice I shall try now working along those lines. There are several lines of inquiry:

    • Birth dates and parent/family information for James Quigley and Elizabeth Lane
    • On my ggrandfather's wedding certificate he reports his father as a farmer

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - is as follows

    • My ggrandfather James Quigley born 1842 - (James and Elizabeth's son) - arrived in Victoria, Australia in 1862 and went to the gold fields of Ballarat.
    • His brother Matthew born 1843/44 Dublin - went to Boston MA in 1872 and was one of their first policemen.
    • A sister Ann married James McKanna (McKenna perhaps) and their children Mary and Owen were mentioned in Matthew Quigley's will.

That is all the information I have - it would be wonderful to discover our roots.

    Many thanks for your kindness

    With great appreciation

    Karen Kestigian (nee Quigley)

  • Hi Karen

delighted you found some of what you are looking for, very good of you to get back as often the replies disappear into cyberspace to be heard never again.

In McLysaghts Surnames of Ireland and I quote O'Coigligh (Gaelic sounds like Cogley) and it then says (Woulfe (a previous surname researcher Ithink) says the name is derived from coigeal, denoting a person with unkempt hair, which is conjectural, (give you a smile anyway) This sept (Gaelic or Irish word for the Scottish Clan) of the Ui Fiacrach is now dispersed with the name found throughout Ireland. It is most numerous in Donegal and Derry. Also see Quigg.

The site Irish Genealogy is been updated all the time and should in time give you all the Irish Civil and Church records. It is almost impossible to get back beyond 1800 for Catholics but on this site the Flax Growers list and Hearth Money Rolls may assist http://www.failteromhat.com/ look under census/directories. There was a huge land transfer in the 1641 period to 1670 mainly catholic to protestant settlers and some info here http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/

The site I gave previously on Louth Genealogy has graveyard lsitings and is updated from time to time. My email on this site is:stpeters@irelandxo.com if you want to ask me anything directly or post on site in case a volunteer for mid Louth emerges.

There is a history site but I think it is password proteceted. http://www.midlouthhistory.com/

Check FB for local page and may get lucky.

    Rushing now.

    Regards

    Pat
