I am looking for information on Edward Ranson and his parents. Edward was born in county Louth in 1817. I believe his father’s name was Joseph Ranson but have no details of his mother.

  • Hello Edward

there is a Joseph Ransom on the Flax Growers List of 1796 at Castletown Dundalk which is in the north west of Louth. There are no Ransom in Griffiths Valuation done circa 1850 to 1860 for Ireland showing only 3 Ransoms in Ireland. Two of these are in County Down which is the next county north of Dundalk.

    See http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/   For flax growers.

The Irish Family History website allows limited searching before you must pay. There are seven Ransom births on it. Excuse me here but I am assuming from the name they were Protestant and the Church Representative Body for the Church of Ireland are putting their records on line but have only started.

Assuming the land in 1796 was Joseph's it would be recorded when sold but you would either follow this up yourself or get a professional genealogist to do it.

if you are interested in following up any County Down connection try searching for Ros Davies website or Raymond's County Down site.

let me know if any more questions.

    regards

  • Hello Linda

Sorry to call you Edward. On the website JBHall Freservers I sent you  there is reference to the Wildgoose Lodge murders in 1816. This would be very close to Castletown Dundalk certainly less than 10 miles from Edwards birth place the year after and there is a book recently published about it referenced on the article I think. Fairly brutal I believe but I find the history of an area very interesting when I have a connection if you would like to learn more about the tough times there were then.

i live about 30 miles away in the south of the county Louth.

    happy Hunting

  • Thanks Pat.  I am very interested in the history of the area.  My great uncle told me that the Ransons originally came to Ireland from England with Oliver Cromwell's army.  I was looking at some of the information on the site you gave me and that seems to match up with the history of the area as well. I can see that I have much happy researching to do.  Linda   Linda

  • Hi Linda a new bit of interesting news and some conjecture. This site went online today and maybe you will find something to really interest you. http://downsurvey.tcd.ie/index.html

Also there is a John Ransom in the Tithe Applotment books here circa 1823 to 1837. That is in Castletown Dundalk.

    see http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

Now for conjecture. An ancestor of my wife got land about this time about 20 miles to the east and we recently were told they were from Cornwall in the early. 1600s and came with Cromwell.

now there was a news story from Cornwall last week on the BBC which we receive in Ireland and the local reporter a lady had the name Ransome, could the people in that part of his come from there.

    just a thought.

  • Hi Pat,

Thanks for the web page links.  They will be very interesting.

My great uncle said that the Ransons who came from England with Cromwell's army were from Wilton.  I notice that there are farm properties known as Wilton Mill houses in Cornwall. All very interesting.
