Hello all.. I am trying to find Sharkey/Murray ancestors. My gg-Grandfather was James Murray from Tallanstown, County Louth. He was born 1801.. He married Mary Sharkey in, about 1831. They had 5 sons.. James, Felix, Charles, Thomas & my great grandfather John Murray. They moved to the USA in 1860, & lived in NYC. I have been trying to find any Murray or Sharkey ancestors. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank You

Pat

  • Hi Pat, the marriage in Tallanstown was on the 16th December, 1831, there is no other information except the witnesses were a Sharky (spelling as transcribed) and a Connolly lady, no townland but parish Tallanstown, you can view the original entry here, https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0234

There was a survey/census of Tallanstown done in 1837, listing names and townlands, there are a lot of Sharkeys but only two or three Murray families. It is not possible to identify which family is yours of course, only heads of house are listed.

You could also check Griffiths Valuation to see if they are mentioned, was done in Louth in 1854 and can be found here, http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=placeSearch Iset it up for places so you can look at Tallanstown and then click occupants or go to the search names facility. The site is often down lately

There is a site on Louth here http://jbhall.clahs.ie/ and there is a bit about the Wild Goose Lodge murders about 1815, not a pleasant read, Netflix done a film by that name about 3 years ago, filmed locally you may wish to see, assume they still have it. As no parents names are given on the record I looked at it is impossible to go further unless you have siblings and may find it on other marriages or on a death certificate, but only church records are available back then, there is also a Flax Growers list for 1796 and you may find a name there and a locality but only those growing Flax listed.

There is also a Louth Genealogy private Facebook page, apply to join and you could ask about living relatives. We have no volunteer for that parish, I am nearest and live about 25 miles away.

Feel free to ask if there is anything you think I have not covered.

As you can see I am another Pat.

    Regards

    Pat
