I am searching for any info on the Gillane family.  John and Mary Gillane left Charleville (or Charyfield?), Coleman's Well, Stabannan in 1839 for New Orleans. They brought maybe up to nine children with them. My many times great grandmother was oldest child, Mary.  She moved from New Orleans to Cincinnati OH, and then to Chicago.

Desperate for any Gillane info....seems not a common name for this area.

  • Hi Jeanie

There are 5 Gillane baptisms in Louth on www.rootsireland.ie/; none has the e on the end of the name but variations and mis-spellings and transcription errors can account for these

James Gillin 1792; Margaret Gillin 1794 Ann Gillon 1816 Mary Gillan 1844 Helena Gillan 1890

There are 6251 Gillanes in the other counties!

There was no record of the marriage of John Gillane & Mary in Louth but there were lots in other counties

In the Tithe Applotments (1823-37) which are free to search online there are no Gillanes in Louth but there are 12 in other counties including 3 Johns

thanks so much for advice.  We initially thought they were from Limerick but Boston College has posted online the Irish 'searching for missing...' .  There we found an 1859 posting from one of the emigrating Gillanes, Patrick, searching for his siblings since the family split up in America. He definitely lists the point of origin for the family as

county: louth,   parish:stabannan,   townland: charleville/Coleman's well,   Barony: Ardee,   Poor-law: ardee

so I think louth is right. Have I done right by joining the Ireland Reaching Out parish of stabannan?

and I have taken your advice on name differences under advisement.  much thanks!

appreciate all other leads from you or others!
