My ancestors migrated to Australia in the 1840s'. I think they may have been flax growers. They paid for a cabin on the ship, and were quite wealthy, buying considerable lands in Tasmania.

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for the reply. The baptisms are my folk, I am unsure about the marriages though.

    My g/grandmother was Madeline Francesca COUNSEL 1883 - 1948.

Her parents were Richard COUNSEL 1849 - 1939 and Mary Frances SMITH

Richards parents were Peter COUNSEL 1806 - 1866 and Ann MALONE

Peters parents were Lawrence COUNSEL 1770 - 1834 and Mary TIERNEY.

I would love to see full records please.

  • Hi Jennifer & Colin

I am the volunteer for Drogheda in south Louth and take an interest in unusual surnames, Col has done the heavy work but as Tallanstown and Clonkeen are close together north of Ardee I done a little rooting on the name, firstly I searched a site all about Louth and was disappointed to find only a grave inscription for a Parish Priest in Tallanstown, given the priest bit hardly a direct ancestor, see http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/ chuck Counsel into the search box and one hit, others as you probably well know are for legal people.

As you menitoned flax growing I searched the Flax Growers list and found a Lawrence Council, change of vowel but close enough for me, see http://www.failteromhat.com/flax/louth.php this is a list done in 1796.

Also in Griffiths there are 3 Counsel hits in the area, not yours but relatives I imagine, see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS… There are two hits where Counsel is the landlord rather than the tenant and the separate icon open in different screens but you can locate where they lived from the plot number and then in the map icon find the plot and drag the bar to the left to get a modern map, it is a bit fiddly but you can see the area and the area has not developed a lot other than new roads and houses.

In the first site I gave you search Wild Goose Lodge murders which took place nearby in 1815 I think, There was a film of this name released late last year on Netflix I think, it was all filmed in the area if you are interested in that sort of thing.

Louth does not get many queries compared to other counties but a lot of them are for the area Ardee to Dundalk and around the time you mention.
