Hi,

I have information that Jane, my paternal grandmother, was born in the parish of Termonfeckin on November 12, 1888. I have been able to find the baptism records of her three siblings as well as the marriage certificate for her parents, Andrew Coogan and Mary Toner. The first documentation I can find for Jane is on a passenger list showing her arrival in NYC in 1905.

I would appreciate any assistance in obtaining documentary evidence to confirm her birth.

Thx

  • Hi James

www.rootsireland.ie/ (subscription site) has 4 children born to Andrew Coogan & Mary Toner 1888 + - 10 years:

    Michael 1883 Patrick 1884 Mary B 1886 & Andrew 1893

No sign of Jane I'm afraid

  • Col,

Thanks for checking. Roots... is where I did find Jane's siblings and parents; granparents, uncles, aunts and on. But, as you've said, no Jane.

That is the reason that I posted through Ireland Reaching Out.

  • Jim,
If posters would mention the sites they have searched it would save us volunteers a lot of work!
You said you only found 3 siblingss but I found 4.
I wonder if the Mary B could be Jane as ancestry has an arrival for Jane MARIA Coogan 1905 who is from Drogheda (Louth)

    Name: Jane Maria Coogan
    Arrival Date: 27 Sep 1905
    Birth Date: abt 1887

  • Col,

Thanks. I was careless in saying three sibling. Jane had four. I apologize.

Jane did arrive  in NYC in 1905 and married my grandfather, Patrick Joseph McDonald in 1908. Her brother, Michael, was killed at the beginning of WW1 in 1914. A distributon of a grant to soldiers that died mention all of the siblings and identifies Jane as Jane McDonald, her married name. So I know she is a member of that family.

Why she does not appear in any Irish records, I know not.

I will reach out to the chuch of the Immaculate Conception in Termonfeckin and hope that there is a sacrament record for Jane.

Than you for you interest and assistance.

  • Hi Jim

Here's a bit more evidence that Jane could be Mary:

http://Coogan Andrew 54 Male Head of Family Roman Catholic Coogan Mary 13 Female Daughter Roman Catholic Coogan Andrew 8 Male Son Roman Catholic

This is the 1901 Irish Census (free online) showing the family such as it was; there is no Jane anywhere just this Mary.

The Jane Maria who arrived in 1905 was born 1887/8 - same year as Mary.

The 1911 cesnsu doesn't have a Mary Coogan of the right age & rootsireland doesn't have a marriage for Mary Coogan with a birth year around 1888.

So this young Irish lass hopped on a boat & decided to call herself Jane because she preferred it to Mary?

Unless of course the Immaculate Conception comes up with some contrary evidence.

  • Mary was baptised 1/13/1886. There is later evidence that she married Peter Dorn and remained in Ireland. Jane was born in 1888.
