I am seeking information about my great-grandfather, John Joseph Lavelle.  He was born in County Mayo (many sources claim in Achill) on 25 January 1851.  His parents were Michael Lavelle and Mary Judge Walsh.  I have not been able to determine for certain where he was born or lived in his early childhood or information about either parent.  Additionally, I have been unable to find any information on when he departed Ireland for North America.

I will be visiting Achill in early June of this year and would appreciate any information about any or all of the aforementioned Lavelles.

Any help that could be provided would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Ken I realise the years are not what you had but these are what came up.
If you have not been to Achill before you are in for a treat - it is a stunning part of Ireland!

I couldn't find any Lavelles in the Irish Censuses of 1821, 41 or 51 or in the Tithe Applotments (both of these are free online) but there are 400+ Lavelles in Achill in Griffiths Valuation 1855 available at
    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/

I have access to ancestry.com which has a few Lavelle trees which may be relevant; if you tell me which part of North America John went to I can check them.

One of the records showed a Lavelle marrying a Mary Cafferky (my surname) so perhaps we are distantly related.

  • Ken, I was looking at a cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo for another poster and thought I'd check the Lavelle records also; turns out there are 17 recods - mostly from Mayo including a couple from Achill.
The most relevant is this one:
Lord have mercy on the soul of
    Michael Lavelle
who died on 31st December 1884
    aged 59 years
Erected by his son John F Lavelle
    Cleveland Ohio America
It is in the SLIEVEMORE Cemetery

  • Ken:

Just a minor point to add to Co;'s research and suggestions. The Achill RC parish records start in the 1867-1868 time period so if your John was born around 1851 there won't be any baptismal or marriage records available.

There are two possible civil death index records for a Michael Lavelle in the Newport registration district which included Achill. One Michael died in 1881 and the other in 1884. You would have to get copies of these records from the General Register Office ( around 4 euros each) to determine if either was for your ancestor. If you want to get copies let us know and we can provide instructions.
