Any help with ny X2 Gt Grandparents would be greatly appreciated....here goes.....
I am trying to find a birth and death for JAMES CORRIGAN.....
The info that I have is I think James may have been born around about 1858 on ACHILL ISLAND possibly near SHRAHEENS....about the same as his wife HONOR PATTEN.
They were married 2 FEB 1878 on Achill...the marriage record states that they were 2 / 3 cousins. The witnesses to the marriage was a MICHAEL & BRIDGET CORRIGAN....I wonder if Michael may have been his brother as this name is handed down through the generations..
I have been given info ( ok try to follow me ) from James Corrigan 1906 - 1986...grandson to the James that I am researching.
When James 1906 passed away his son also called Michael....found papers where his fathers had started to write his biography..... from his writings we were given the forebearers names as LUKE .....probally father to James @1858....then DANIEL / DONALD and lastly EDWARD...... but that is futher research for me to do...
My Grandfather is called Michael 1904 - 1970...he is the brother to James 1906...both brothers also called there sons Michael carrying on the family names.
WHAT I AM REALLY TRYING TO FIND IS WHAT HAPPEN TO MY X2 GT GF JAMES @1858.
I do not know what happed to him....in 1901 his wife HONOR is listed as a WIDOW living with their son JOHN my GT GF who is yet to be married....he marries 3 yrs later to Mary Kilbane.
Where did James go ????? Did he die in the famine ??? Did he go to America ???...if so why did Honor and John not follow...???? I have been told by my father and his sister that our ancestors did have connections to the IRA.....did something happen there???? this is a mystery I would dearly love to solve....
ANY TAKERS...

Hi Heather,
There is a death record 1879 in Mayo for a James born 1857, the registration is Clogher.

Hi Heather
The closest matches for a birth/baptism of James Corrigan around 1858 in Mayo is James Corrigan 1850 & James Currigan 1863. (Literacy & transcrition issues and personal whims often resulted in spelling variations). However they were not in Achill. There are 4 James Corrigan births in Achill but they are 1870, 1871, 1892 & 1895.
There is a charge on rootsireland to view the full records.
As well as the death record Brendan has mentioned there is one on rootsireland in Mayo: - 1889 aged 30 (Currigan)

The marriage record of James & Honor Patten is there also - 1878 Mayo - but it is Currigan also; the parish is Achill RC.
http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y
There are 9 baptism records of Michael Corrigan in Mayo starting at 1868 to 1897; none for Luke; 1 for Daniel 1896 and 4 for Edward 1876-1888 ALL IN ACHILL.
On ancestry.com a few public member trees have James's parents as Luke Corrigan and Sabine Gallagher but I couldn't find this record.
The Tithe Applotments (free on-line) 1823-37 have 293 Corrigans but none in Mayo.
Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 (free online) has 1191 Corrigans with 150 in Mayo with 99 in Achill including 12 Lukes - maybe there's a Sraheens address among them?

Firstly may I say...Thanks Col & Brendan....ya have defo opened up some new leads for me to investigate further....THANKS.
One more querry if I may......
I have been told that my fathers Aunt Sarah...(daughter of John/Sean from his second marriage to Julia Patton ) had sold the land that had been in family through the generations...My question is that if James @1858 had died... would the land have been left to Honoor then passed to my Gt GF John / Sean and then finally to his daughter Sarah .
Would there be a record of when and how the land was passed through the family....but most importantly...where the heck would I start to look for it...
Maybe this might help me link it with the Griffiths records that I have found.....I have found all my names and the forebearers given by James 1906...all were on land owned by William Pike...at the same time....
Could you please point me in the right directions...Thank You once again...
Forever grateful

Hi Heather,
Middle 1800's in Ireland most Irish catholics were tenant farmers, the land act came in early 1880, it was very unusual for land to pass on to a female with the exception that she was a widow.
If you have a reference / plot number in Griffiths Valuation, the history of that plot can be researched in the Valuation Office in Dublin, 1850's to 1980, each transfer of tenant is recorded including date of transfer.
