I am trying to trace the birthplace of my great grandfather John McHale born circa 1863 in Mayo. Unfortunately I don't know where. In the 1901 and 1911 census he was living in Emo, Queens County . He was married to Elizabeth (Cullen ) and they had four sons- Patrick born 1891 , Thomas born 1895 , Michael (my grandfather) born 1899 and Peter born 1904.
His father was Patrick McHale also from Mayo. He was born in 1830/40.
I would be very grateful for any help in tracing my family.
Many thanks.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Roots Ireland had a number of John McHale baptismal/birth records around 1863. The 1863 record is below from Turlough. There was also two 1862 records and four 1864 records.
I tried to locate the marriage record for Elizabeth Cullen and John McHale but had no success. I noticed in the 1901 and 1911 census records that her mother was Bridget Lynch so I also searched under Lynch with no success. Is it possible they were married outside of Ireland. Was John in the military for a period of time?

There were quite a few McHales in Achill Mayo which is my parish of interest but I couldn't find your line there.
The marriage record from www.rootsireland.ie/ has his first name as Michael - if this is your man?

Hi Cousin Col!
I envy you having all that time in the Rebel County. We will likely go back again in November for ten days or so.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies.
The confusion in my search is because my great grandfather, as far as I am aware ,was called Michael John McHale but for some reason he is called John McHale on the 1901 and 1911 censuses although his wedding certificate and my grandfather Michael's birth certificate names him as Michael McHale.
I would be grateful for any help in tracing a Michael McHale born circa 1830/40 in Mayo. I don't know which district and am a loss as to where to start.
Many thanks.

McHale is a very common surname in Mayo. There were eleven Michael McHale baptismal records in the 1830s on Roots Ireland and many Mayo churches do not have records back to the 1830s. so very difficult to trace.
