  • Hi,

Sorry but no name is showing up on the message.

I am wondering if the Ardagh you are looking for is part of Killeagh Parish which is in East Cork quite close to the town of Youghal and the border with county Waterford. Killeagh Parish consists of the old parishes of Ardagh, Dangandonovan and Killeagh.

I have some good and bad news for you.

The Baptismal records for the Parish only date from 1829 which is too late for you.

We do have a 1766 census for the Ardagh area which includes a number of Murphy and Mead families but no way of making a direct connection. It only gives the fathers name and no. in the family as listed below.

John Murphy his wife and 2 children                                 Garrett Mead his wife and 2 children

    Maurice  "       "     "     " 1 child                                        Patrick     "      "      "     "   1 child

    Denis      "        "       "   "   4 children                               William       "     "       "      "  2 children

    Michael   "        "       "    "   4      "                                    John         "       "       "      "  5    "

    John        "        "       "    "    3     "                                   Will            "      "        "      "   2    "

    Maurice    "       "        "                                                   Darby         "       "       "      "    4   "

    Michael     "       "        "    "  2      "

    Widow       "      and 1 daughter

Denis       "      his wife and 3 children                              John Kelly  his wife and 3 children

    Daniel      "        "     "       "   2    "                                    James  "     "      "     "   3    "

The people you have mentioned could possibly be any of the children above!!!!!!

Do you have any further information like names of their children etc. which may give us some ideas as family names were usually repeated. That can be seen above in the lists.

The local Community Council has a website www.killeaghinch.org which will give you information on the area.

I will check to see if there is any information on the gravestones from the area but do not have that information to hand at the moment.

Keep in touch direct at anneoneillk@gmail.com.

    Regards for now.

  • Dear Anne,

Sue Scarcella here. Thanks so much for all your kindness and hard work. The Ardagh I seek is, indeed, the one near Youghal. Michael signed up there and several of his children were born there.

    Their children are:

     Mary Murphy(abt 1831 - 16 Jun 1895)

     Edward William Murphy (abt 1826 - 2 Jan 1876)

     Margaret Murphy (abt 1840 - 29 Nov 1899)

    Elizabeth Ellen Murphy(1 Mar 1841 - 14 Oct 1900)

     James Joseph Murphy (abt 1846 - 25 Aug 1903)

Sadly, I can't see any connection in the names.

But, I am very thankful for any small piece of information.

    Yours,

    Sue

  • Hi Sue,

Your e-mail  did not show up so i am posting two headstone readings from Ardagh graveyard. Both are close together.

1.Erected by Wm. Murphy of Barnavidane  in mem. of his Father Michael, also his brother and sisters John, Bridget, Hannah, Mary. (No Dates)

2.Erected by Catherine Murphy in Men. of her father Timothy Murphy who dept. this life Janry 6th 1807 age 78 years. Her brother Bartholomew Murphy also died June 29th 1815 aged 24 years.May their souls R.I.P. Amen. ( This would make the Dad  about 60 when th son was born)

These headstones were read in the 1970's but never published. We are hoping to read and record them shortly to put them up on the free website www.historicgraves.ie.This is an on going project that started this year and will be agreat help to people when complete. we have the old Killeagh graveyard complete and up on the site.

I note you said the children were born in Youghal. Have you checked with Youghal as their records date back to around the 1800's. The town records usually are older then the rural ones.

    Regards for now. Anne.

  • Hi Sue,

It has been some time since we were in touch but i am wondering if you can give me your e-mail address.

I got an e-mail today from a lady in Australia wondering if i could put her in touch with you as she is a descendent of the Murphy's and has a lot of research done on the family and wants to make contact with you.

Hoping this will get to you and that i hear back from you.

    Regards for now. Anne.
