I am visiting Ireland, and the Ballinrobe area in April 2013. I recently received a funeral holy card for a Margaret Sullivan, who passed away in 1979, in Ballinrobe,  aged around 87. My grandfather, William Sullivan, came to USA in the 1870s (I think). I believe he was born in 1866. He settled in Youngstown, OH and was a proud member of the Robert Emmett Society in the US. Anyone familiar with this family?  Thank you!

  • Hi

    Thank you for your message.

Are you looking for more information regarding the family - or just sharing information?

Do you know much about his emigration? The dates, the reason why he left, who he  may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. One site which might be helpful is:

    US National Archives/Immigration info: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

If you're looking for family members who stayed in Ireland - There is lots of useful information to be found in the 1901 and 1911 census records. You can find this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 and might also be helpful to you. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

If you would like to share your travel dates with us via info@irelandxo.com - we will endeavour to put you in contact with a volunteer who may be able to offer osme assistance or advice.

Please remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
