Trying to trace my great grandmother, Catherine Churchill who was born in Bekon parish , near Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo in the late 1830s / early 40s, Her father , John Churchill was a blacksmith. She married in Birkenhead ( Patrick Phillips ) in 1865, The family were Catholics. Catherine's father was deceased at the time of her marriage.

Can anyone suggest the best research resources for births/ baptisms/ marriages/ deaths in pre 1870s Mayo ?

Thank you.

  • Hello again Margaret:

I can not find any civil index records for Churchills in the Claremorris registration district which would include Ballyhaunis. Since Ballyhaunis is very close to the border with Roscommon and also not far from Galway, I expanded the Griffiths search beyond Mayo. There was one Churchill record in the Galway side of Ballinrobe for a Thomas Churchill but that would be a good 20 miles from Ballyhaunis. The only Roscommon record was too far away. www.askaboutireland.ie allows you to search for Griffiths records.

The only other records are church records and we know Bekan parish is too late. I searched Roots Ireland for all of Ireland from 1832-1848 for Catherine with father John and got no record. Some parishes are not on Roots. We are expecting that Find My Past will be releasing a more comprehensive baptismal record data base in late March. If you want to contact me then, I will search against their new data base and see if a record comes up.

  • Thank you again !

Catherine Churchill's father was named Patrick.

Looking forward to possible progress with both sets of great grandparents in late March.

    Good wishes,

    Margaret.

I re-searched from 1833-1847 for all of Ireland and could not find any Churchill baptismal records where the father was Patrick.

  • Hello, The Thomas Churchill mentioned earlier in this post is my 2nd Great grandfather.  Does anyone have any advice of how I can find out about his parents and siblings.  I know a little about Thomas himself, his birth & death, marriage and some children.  Many thanks.  Melissa

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume you are referring to the Thomas Churchill from Killteeaun townland in Ross civil parish Co. Galway. The Griffiths was taken around 1855 for Galway. Unfortunately, the church records in that area start around 1855 so we won't be able to find a baptismal record. I was unable to locate a death record.

  • Re Thomas Churchill, I came across the name when trying to find out more about my great grandmother Catherine Churchill.

She was in Birkenhead by 1861 - if not before then.

If you go to the Ancestry website you will find details of a Thomas Churchill from Mayo in either the 1851 or 1861 census findings.

    Hope it will be useful.
