Hello -

All I know about my  family in Ireland is that they came from Mayo.  I signed up for Burriscarra since I knew that Stantons once had a presence there.

My family emigrated as a group, which is pretty rare, on the Viceroy, landed in New Orleans 4 Jan 1848 - father Michael Stanton, mother Mary, sons Thomas, Patrick, Michael, John, Austin, daughter Mary Ann.  They settled far from New Orleans, in Warrick County, Indiana! (I figure they must have traveled up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers - Warrick Co is right on the Ohio.)

I have traced most of them in the US, but I really don't know where to start in Ireland - those are pretty common names (except for Austin).

    Have you tried checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp

    or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) https://familysearch.org/ for information regarding the family?

    Valuations office in Dublin (http://www.valoff.ie) will have a record of the land registry from 1855 to modern times. This will assist in seeing what happened to any land the family may have owned.

    You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ This site also allows you to 'BROWSE' information regarding resources related to each county.

     

    Remember to post as much information as you can regarding the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
