Hi, Researching McCormack family background, found out today that my great, great grandad was born in Longford, possibly a small town 20 miles north of Castle Bar rather than Co Longford. His name was William McCormack, born 1789, married to Ellen Dunleavey they had a number of children of which i think Bridget, Peter Elenor and mary where born in Ireland before the family moved to Hollywel in Wales.

So if anyone can shed any further light on this, maybe a distant relative of one of their children, it would be great to know more as I believe the McCormack name is well known around Castle Bar area.

Thanks in advance

Castlebar is a town in Co. Mayo and Mayo is a good distance from Co.Longford.

I did search on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found a December 4 1839 marriage between a William McCormac and an Ellen Dunlevy (the names are based on a transcription of the parish register) and the RC parish was Aglish also know as Castlebar. I did not find any baptismal records for the children and the Aglish baptismal records are available for the 1840s and 1850s.

So there are two possibilities. The family may not have lived in the area near Aglish RC parish but in a nearby area where parish records do not go back to the 1840s. The second possibility is that William and Ellen left for another part of Ireland or possibly Wales soon after 1839. I did not find any records in other parts of Ireland on Roots Ireland.

  • thank you Roger, The reference for Castlebar came from the 1861 census which shows the family living in Wales, and in the where born section states Ireland, Cadstle Bar for both William and Ellen. so i was hoping i might find their parents or siblings information and or decentant familys, as it would be nice to visit at some point.

The baptismal records for Aglish/Castlebar RC parish start in 1838 and marriages in 1824. So no baptismal records would be available for William and Ellen if they were baptized in that parish.

We were in Ireland last October and spent four days in the Castlebar area. Vibrant and growing town and is not far from Ireland West Airport.
