My husband's maternal great grandfather, Patrick Gorman was married in 1867 to Bridget King at the Chapel of Islandeady. I have the original marriage certificate that lists Patrick's father as James Gorman and Bridget's father as James King.The names of the mothers are not listed in this record. Any suggestions where to find this information?  Thank you.

  • Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church, so I’d look for her baptism in the local parish records. That should give you her mother’s name. The groom might also be from that parish too. The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

    I searched on Roots Ireland from 1832-1852 in the Islandeady RC records and the only Bridget King baptismal record, father James, that came up is the transcription shown below. As Elwyn indicated, you can see the actual registry entry by going to the link he gave you and entering Islandeady and records in 1841.  By the way, the townland is shown as Laplagh but more likely it would be Lappallagh in Islandeady civil parish. Very large townland over 1500 acres. The 1901 census does show a King family. Not sure how they connect to Bridget's family.

    Also looked for Patrick Gorman and he was not in Islandeady but there was a Patrick Gorman baptismal record in the Balla RC records, father James in 1841. See transcription below. Balla is two parishes to the east of Islandeady. Weatherfort townland (292 acres) in Rosslee civil parish.     This may be a different Patrick Gorman so be cautious until you can further verify.
