Hello,
I am trying to figure out the siblings for my second great grandmother, Eleanor (Ellen) Cain born about 1849, married in Belaghy Chapel, Kilbeagh 13 Jan 1868 to John Gallagher, and died in 1925 in Tullynahoo. Her civil marriage cert. indicates Mark Cain as her father, she's living in Hagfield. Then I found a sibling, Bridget, born about 1855, married in 1876 also in Kilbeagh to James Frain. Her civil marriage cert. also has Mark as father, and living in Hagfield. Additionally, I have a civil death record for Mark Cain in Hagfield on 14 Apr 1882 with wife Mary as present at his death.
That's where the story ends, or so I thought...until I came across children of Mark Cain (also spelled Kean) and Mary Lavin in Kilbeagh. They are: Mary 1856, Ann 1862, Michael 1863, Catherine 1866, and another Ann 1868.
The part I cannot figure out is that the civil birth records for the last two daughters show the family living in Tomboholla, Kilbeagh. I know that Hagfield (Treanacally) and Tomboholla are neighboring townlands. Finally, there are two Griffith's Valuation records for Mark Cain...one in Hagfield (1857) and another in Tomboholla (1857).
Is it probable that Mark Cain had two different tenancies in different townlands? Or, are these two different families with similar names?
Thanks for any information!
Carolyn

Carolyn:
I located an 1887 marriage record for a James Kane from Tomboholla marrying a Margaret Mannion on 1887, father Mark Kane deceased. See third record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1887/10813/5943791.pdf
Listed as James Kean in 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilbeagh/Tamboholla/1599634/
I located five baptismal records on Roots Ireland for children of Mark Kean and Mary Lavin. My data does not quite match your data.
Mary 1856 Margaret 1859 Anne 1862 Catherine 1866 (Tombohola) Mark 1868 (Tombohola). No record for a James.
You may have two different families.

Hi Roger,
I'm beginning to think this is two different families as well. I failed to mention above that there is a civil death record for Mary Kain on 17 Sep 1907 in Bushfield, Swinford with son James present at death. I could not find a James until the records you mention above. The only Bushfield townland I have found is in Kilcommon, so perhaps it no longer exists in Swinford. Nevertheless, this death record only confuses the issue further due to the townland information. I believe that there are two Cain families...one in Hagfield and one in Tomboholla.
Thanks for the information you found!

Roger,
One last item to run by you...on Bridget Cain's civil marriage record in 1876 to James Frain, it says father is dead..no first name given. However, the civil death record for Mark Cain in 1882 seems pretty strong.....do you think a mistake was made on Bridget's marriage record or is the death record incorrect? I suppose another possibility is that Bridget is not his daughter!
Thanks
Carolyn

Carolyn:
I have a feeling that the Mary Kain who died in 1907 may not be connected. I wanted to access the NAI census site but it is currently down.
Bushfield must be a local place name. See this link. There is a Kevin Murray who may be able to help. His e-mail is on this site.
