Hello !
I'm looking for any information on Thomas Gallagher, who married Harriet Lavin in about 1845. That's approximate because their daughter Catherine was born in 1864 (and I'm not sure if she was the first born). Another daughter, Agnes was born soon after, and another, Anne, after that.
The family emigrated around 1875 to New York City but Anne Gallagher returned in the 1930s or so. She was the beneficiary of a life insurance policy on which her address is noted Lurga Lower, Charlestown, Co. Mayo. I'm guessing she returned to the family townland.
Any insights are much appreciated -- it's my family's first knowledge of Mayo roots!
Best,
Brian

Brian:
The records for Kilbeagh (Charlestown) RC parish start in 1855 for baptisms and 1845 for marriages. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate the marriage record. Likely, Thomas and Mary were married prior to May 1845 when records begin.
Mary February 24 1856 James November 2 1858 Anne September 28 1861 Margaret September 4 1864 Bridget May 27 1867 In all cases, the mother's name was Attracta and presumably Harriet was her nickname?
Civil registration of births started in 1864. I found the civil records for both Mary and Bridget. Location was Lurga Lower.
See first record for Margaret August 15 1864
See seventh record for Bridget May 17 1867
I looked at the 1901 census for Lurga Lower and there were three Gallagher families. Possibly this is the record for your family. Mother is listed as Agnes.

Roger, thank you so much for your sleuthing! I'd never heard the name Attracta before.
It really opens up so many more doors -- wow!
