GG Grandfather was Patrick O'Hora, he was born in Backs around 1837. His Father was also Patrick.

Patrick jnr's Wedding certificate gives his father's name and notes that he was dead at the time of the marriage, to Mary Sullivan, in England, in 1867. His occupation was given as a farmer.

Patrick and Mary were both Roman catholics.

The name changed from OHora to OHara on census forms for Patrick and Mary's children.

Patrick first appears in the English censii in 1861 in Rochdale, Lancashire.

I am looking for any help in tracing my Irish forebears, their families, lifestyles and relations.

Thanking you all in anticipation.

Kind Regards

  • There are some O'Hora families in Backs listed on this webpage

    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deesegenes/backs.htm

Your family seem to have left Ireland before the 1901/1911 Census (although you could check for possible relatives at this time)   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=19…

Prior to that you could browse the Griffiths Valuations 1850's

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

The Tithe Applotments 1823-1837 only show 2 O Hora families in Mayo, but you could try name variants (spelling)

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

As Backs is in North Mayo you could look at these websites.

    http://goldenlangan.com/

Cemeteries in Backs parish would be Ballynahaglish, Cloghans, I have some Ballynahaglish gravestone on this flicker account,  hope this link works for you

  • Thank you for your comments,

I will bring you up to date with my findings:-

I have printed off the Backs Births and marriages.

I have printed off the 1901/11 census and there are 324 OHoras entries which I need to check over.

I found in Griffiths a record for Patrick OHora leasing land in Tullysleva, township Ardagh, near to Ballina. The tithe records also show a Patrick OHora in Kilbelfad, both are very close to each other.

I had already visited the Golden/Langan site and pulled off some useful maps and other data, including graveyard details. By far the most OHoras buried are in Leigue cemetery, near Ballina, but most of the headstones that are readable are 20th century, there are lots of illedgible ones and even more unmarked graves.

I know Patrick died before 1867 and I have found a Ballina record for death in 1865.

I think he married a Biddy Mangan in 1829 and that they had at least 3 children, Patrick born 1836/7, Mary who married John Deasy and Catharn who married Patt Royne.

There are two death records for Biddy OHora in Ballina, one in 1886 and one in 1888, she would have been in her 80s.

I need to find any, if any, of Patrick jnr's brothers as they would have carried the name down.

Please keep in touch if you come across any other information that you think may help me in my quest.

    Kind Regards

  • I think the attached document is my GG Grandfather's baptism record, He was named Patt, which is the name he used on his wedding certificate and it confirms that his father was called Patrick (Patt) and that his mother was Biddy Mangan. The service was carried out in Backs/Knockmore, which also fits.Unfortunatly the sponsors names are unknown on this record. The date of the 4th of December 1838 is very close to the varying dates of birth I have found in other documents.

The address is given as Ballintleva and I am unable to find a local one, the only one I can find is some distance away, near Castlebar.

Using this information I was able to find some of his siblings:-

    John B 1832

Ned (Short for Edmund or Edward?) B 1834

    Ellen B 1836

I am experiencing some difficulty in interpreting the online marriage records for his siblings as all that is shown is a list of people present with no indication of who the Groom and Bride were. Is there a protocol in the records that helps determine these facts?

It appears that all the family, with the exception of Ellen, perhaps, died quite young and before the 1901 census, including Biddy so I really need to confirm their marriage and subsequent family details in order to progress further.

I would be grateful if anyone has more detail about this branch of the OHora family.

  • Strange that the address on the Certificate is Ballintleva, this is a townland in Clogher, Westport.

The most likely Cemeteries for Knockmore/Backs is Cloghans(Kilbefad) and Ballynahaglish.

Prior to, during and after the Famine it was common for families to use just stones to mark the resting place of their family who had passed.  Most cemeteries here have older sections where you will find large stones, the older headstones can sometimes be eligible.

O Hora is still a common name in the Foxford/Ballina/Knockmore area and it is quite possible that the family may have spread out to nearby townland.

The Land Commission also redistributed lands, when the plots were too small for the families to survive on, they also encouraged home industry and gave grants for same.

Mangan is a surname even now in Knockmore/Foxford area and I think Royne might be Ruane, - very common there too.

There were o Horas in Kilbefad in 1796

  • Hi Turlough,

What is your name? It is much more human to talk to a person than a nom de plume.

I am Kevin Michael O'Hara, born in 1952 in Rossendale, Lancashire, where my Irish forebears settled after leaving Co Mayo.

I now live in Worcester, in the middle of England.

Any advice on interpretating The Irish Civil Marriage index, as a list of people not identifying the Groom and Bride, is not a deal of help?

I am drawing a blank of my GGG Grandmother Biddy O'Hora, nee Mangan, born in 1804 ish, was it common practice to name your children after your parents, so her second child Ned could have been after her father Edward or Edmond? If this was a common occurance then her first born John was probably named after his grandfather O'Hora.

Thank you for all the information and leads that you have given me and I look forward to my chosen parishes, Ardagh, Kilbelfad and Ballynaglahish coming back to me in due course.

I am still confused, as you remark, that the address on my GG Grandfather's baptismal records gives an address that is not local to the parish where the service took place.

How can one access the parish records without physically turning up at the priest's door?

I am also having difficulty finding my GG Grandmother's details, Mary Sullivan, according to UK census details, also born in Mayo to parents John Leo Sullivan and Bridget Quinlan in 1843. She married my Patt in 1867 in England.

I look forward to hearing from you again.

    Kind Regards

    Kevin

  • Hi

    My Name is Dympna,

I have been looking through Census etc, but still having no luck with an O'Hora and Mangan marriage, it is possible that they married in another Townland if the wife was living there.

This is another nice website in the Foxford area, although it is the opposite side of Foxford than Ballynahaglish, you may find some interesting info in the "Historical Section"..

    http://www.attymass.ie/

We have also started a Mayo Genealogy Group, and have a very active Facebook page, just ask to join and post a query (there are many members from Mayo)

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/clansofmayo/

I am sure you are familiar with all the Irish records on Family Search

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&countryId=1927084

Foxford have also established their own page for their "Gathering" later this year, someone there may have info on the Mangan/O'Hora/Ruane families

  • Hi

My wife Anne Foster/ Foulds is a direct decendant fo Patrick O'Hara and Mary Sullivan..

His son, James, had a daughter with Lilian Buxton who he later married.

This daughter, Louisa Buxton, married Arthur Foulds who was my wife's grandfather. Her father was Jack Foulds.

James and Lilian had three more daughters; Mary, Lilian and Annie.

Patrick and Mary both lived in Rossendale and had a total of seven children; Hannah, John, Michael, Thomas, William, James and Mary.

Don't know if any of this helps .

    Regards

  •  Patt jnr and Mary's firstborn they called Ann, is it an Irish convention that the first born daughter is named after the father's mother.     if this is the case then his mother would not be Biddy Mangan but could be an Ann Priall. Anyone aware of Priall marrying a Patt O'Hora?  The children were Ann, Infant, John, Patrick Joseph, Mary, Michael, Thomas, William and James. There is also a stillborn child called John, whose parantage is unclear, mother Mary was too old, son John was already married and had a living son John.

  • I have found a fourth cousin, living in Chandler's Ford, near Winchester. Her O'Hora ancesters stem from a previously unknown younger brother to our Patt, Thomas O'Hora, born in 1840, died around 1890, also in Ballinsleva. He married a Mary Gaughan and they had a child Mary who married a Gaughan. Their daughter, Bea Gaughan married an O'Reilly, which is the maiden name of my 4th cousin, also Mary. We have 3rd cousins still alive in Ballina/Foxford area, Eva who was a nun (Sister Kevin) and Paddy Gaughan, Mary O'Reilly's uncle. I am hoping to meet Mary in near future, and hope to meet Eva and Paddy next Summer when planning to visit Mayo. The Richard O'Hora, who recently lived in Ballinsleva, died in 1991 and appears to have been in a seperate branch of the family. There is also a John O'Hora, who was Master od Ballina workhouse in 1880's. He came from Crossmolina and doesn't appear to be directly part of our family. I have now taken my DNA test and my ethnic origins are: 51% England & NW Europe, 32% Ireland, 12% Wales, 3% Germanic Europe and 2% Sweden & Denmark. I have not found any near Irish cousins.

Since my last post I have visited Mayo and met some 3rd cousins, Paddy Gaughan, Vincent Gaughan and Sister Kevin ( Eva Gaughan). Paddy and Vincent very kindly showed us around the O'Hora area, including their house in Ballinsleva, their church in Knockmore and the local school in Lisiniska. The O'Hora/Gaughan tie up started when Thomas O'Hora, my Gt Gt Grandfather's younger brother, married a Mary Gaughan. Their daughter Mary O'Hora married Patrick (Patsy) Gaughan and they were the grandparents of Paddy, Vincent and Eva. Mary and Patsy are buried in Ballynahaglish, Mary having died in 1952 and Patsy in 1939.
