My g-g-grandmother was Winifred Mellett (b. approx. 1828) in Swinford. She also had a sister Ann, who married Thomas Moore, and a brother, James Mellett, who married a woman named Bridget (maiden name unknown). Winifred married twice: first to Anthony Whyte (1824 - 1854); second to Martin Convey (1825-1896). I'm descended from Winifred and Martin. I know that the Melletts are well-known in Swinford -- some of my cousins have been to Mellett's Emporium, and it appears that we are distantly related to them (common ancestor is probably in the late 1700s or early 1800s). However, the Conveys have been a dead end. I cannot find any Conveys in the U.S. who are related. I know that my Martin Convey came from Swinford - he and Winifred were married in 1856 in Kilconduff and Griffith's shows him leasing land from Captain Brabazon in 1857 in Kilbride. Does anyone  know anything about this family? I would dearly love to find something somewhere about the Conveys. Many thanks! Kate

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There were ten Convey families in Kilconduff civil parish in the 1901 census although none in Kilbride townland.

Have you taken an autosomal DNA test? If you have not taken a test, it would be a good way to identify possible Convey connections in the USA or other countries and possibly Ireland.

Here is a link to the parish register for Swinford/Kilconduff RC parish http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0133

  • My wife often visited Carnaculla, Swinford every summer to until the late 1980's.  The northern edge of her grandmother's property was known as "Convey's Hedge".  Sshe didn't know or remember the Conveys but she believes "Mrs. Convey" delivered her mother in 1924.

  • Pat - What a fascinating piece of info! I wish I knew more about the little towns around Mayo! My Martin Convey's land (rented) was south and a bit east of Swinford - sort of midway between Newpark, Carrowcanada, and Kilbride. I have no clue if that is near your Carnaculla! Do you know?

Roger - Thanks so much for this link and the information. I did have my DNA tested through Ancestry and it is also posted on GED Match. My kit # is A368451, just in case there are any Conveys out there!

  • Hi Kate

I also have had trouble finding Conveys in Ireland,  my mother was Eliza Convey and she was born around Swinford and baptized in Kilasser.  Her father was John Convey and he married mums mother Winifred O'Malley.  I have 1st cousins in London England.

My dad was Edward Scanlon and he and mum and 4 of my brothers immigrated to Australia in 1951.

    Regards

    Maureen
