Good source for old Parish records

Looking for Nealis families in Mayo and could be Sligo . Think  Crossmolina Co. Mayo is my prime town .

Part of Mayo, around Ballina, used to be in Sligo.  Have you checked out the Griffiths' valuations from the mid 1850s for you rnames?  Do you have a time-frame?

Thanks for your reply .  My Winifred Jane Nealis was born approx 1830 and came to Melbourne Australia as a famine orhan on the Lady Kennaway in December 1848  There were at this time Nealis families in Crossmolina--Skreen--Bunnyconnellan and Attymas .   The records show Mayo via Sligo , so assume the assembly point was in Sligo . Have no been able to check any Irish records or Plymouth records onlythe shipping lists  . Winifred told her family that 2 of my cousins have gone to Ammerica . Patricia Nealis in the USA said two of her ancestors arrived in America  in 1860`s  from Crossmolina  . End of story .     All the best for Christmas and 2013 .  Laurie

So, I'd guess that her father was either John, James or Francis.  My suggestion is to look at what she named her children and see if it fits into any traditional Irish naming patterns: http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cregan/patterns.htm Hope this helps.John

John   I have just read your reply  19th December 2012 , My apologies ,for not answering .    All her children  were not named after any Nealis  and she died not telling her children her parents names . On her death certificate parents just shown as Nealis The cousins from Crossmolina  who went to America 1860  named Children for  several generations  Winifred  .  As the catholic Church in Crossmolina  records only started in 1833 , I conclude a dead end .

The Nealis Families seem to have been West Ulster settlers who came to North Mayo (with many others) during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Nealis John Cluddhaun Kilfian Mayo

Both are actually in the parish of Moygownagh. (The Civil Parishes of Kilfian, Crossmolina and Moygownagh have been chopped over the generations) and the Nealis families seem to have been based in Glenmore, Moygownagh on the Orme estate. The earliest reference to Nealis here, is in an Orme will of the 18th century. During the land war the family was evicted from their Glenmore holding, moving back into the mountain where the last Nealis died within living memory. The ruins of the homestead still remain and there are some graves in Moygownagh old cemetary. Any emigrants from Crossmolina area are likely to have come from here in the decades after the Famine.

Liam   What a surprise and my thanks for you have given me more to analize , This the story of the Nealis migration  .

From the Irish Journals and family stories from Mrs. Katie Mclaughlin of Clady ( A Nealis ) Tyrone Ireland , we can assume the McNealis left Donegal (Ardara and/or Glencolumbkille ) because of religious persecution . They stopped at The Diamond near Portadown in 1795 , but were forced to leave and they went to Westport . At what time they dropped the Mc is unknown . but they were known as Nealis at the
Diamond . The Nealis families who came to Mayo were
Hugh--Francis--Francis--Patt--Peter and Tim .Who was the   ancestor of Winifred Jane is anyone`s guess.   

All 9 children of Winifred Jane adored their mother  , but why they did not ask her about her family puzzles me . .

Very interesting - I have quite a bit of information on the 'Ulster migrants' who had to flee Ulster in 1795-96 due to religious persecution.  I have two branches of my family that did that as well.  The Cunninghams lived in Craigavon, near Portadown and settled in Cashel, Kilcummin.  The Hamills were from Tyrone and settled in Raigh, near Newport, Mayo.

Let me look at my records and see what I can find about your family.

John's research seems an excellent lead for you Laurie. Have you come across a Farrell Nealis in your research? or a variant thereof?

John - I would be interested in comparing notes on the Ulster settlers in Mayo as I just completed some research during my MA thesis on this very aspect - I believe that the migration of Ulster Catholics into Mayo was much more numerous than previously understood and also began earlier.

Liaam/John .   No I have never heard of Farrell Nealis   , I will go through my file on the American Nealises  and see if I can add some names  . In the 1990`s about six of us communicated but I think I have only one current email address   namely Tim Nealis fro Skreen .    Laurie
