The earliest ancestor I find in this parish is Thomas Gibbons of Tohermore, Bunnamahon, Kilgeever. That's on the southern side of Clare Island, out towards the furthest point of land. He was born around 1795, died in 1879 at Islandeady near Westport. His wife was Honor Ruddy. He may have had a second marriage as there appears other children born to Thomas Gibbons on Clare with a mother, first name Brigid. In all events, William Gibbons, born to Thomas in 1852, married Mary Malley, b. 1854, daughter of Owen Malley, on 22 Feb 1876.  Three children were born to this couple on Clare Island at Tohermore, Catherine, Patrick, and John. The later died young. William and Mary left the farm and went to live on Bridge Street in Louisburgh on a property that had been in the Malley family . Eight more children were born there. They lived over the pub butcher shop where my son's grandfather, William Gibbons (2) was born in 1894. William (2) came to America in 1915, served in WWI in the US Navy, became a street car conductor in Brooklyn, NY and thence a NY City policeman, had 7 children, among them, William Gibbons (3) now deceased. The pub, after passing through several Gibbons peoprietors, became the Bunowen Inn.

  • My grandmother was Mary (Maryann) Grady, the sister of Sonny (JOhn) and Willie Grady on Strake, Clare Island. My aunt told me that my great-grandfather was called "Pat Willie Ol' Hat".  I am having trouble finding info on this family. According to my family we are related to the Winters, Gallaghers, O'Malley's, Flanagans and, I think, Mary Barrett, who uncle Willie used to check on and look after.

    Hi Margaret,

Civil Registration did not become mandatory in Ireland until 1864 so all records prior to this were kept by the local church. Most of these records are still held locally so you really do need to know where the marriage took place in order to be able to look at the records. You could start with Kilgeever as this was where their daughter was born. It may be an idea to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance.

With regards to Richard?s birth certificate once again you really need to know where he was born to find it. Sometimes however fathers? names were recorded on marriage certificates so if you can at least find that it may be of some help.

One website that you may find useful in terms of Catholic records is the Irish Times, where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes and also where you can find copies of the records. For Kilgeever parish follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Mayo&parish=Kilgeever&churchid=1068

Another website that you may find helpful is the Irish Roots, CO. Mayo which includes lists of baptisms and marriages that took place in some parishes in Mayo:

    http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deesegenes/index.html

Finally, if Richard died after 19864, it would be recorded in civil records. These are  are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

    http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1408347

For more information on these records and how to obtai them go to:

    http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html

I hope some of this is helpful.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you for your response, rthe Westport Family History Centre advised ther was only one record  that was of Mary Bradshaw daughter of Richard Bradshaw and Mary Joyce 1858 one of the Godparents was John Winter

Other than Griffiths Valuation I don't know any more of Irish Records of my ancestors.

Is Kilgeever part of Mayo or are they seperate?

All I know of Richard's birth came from England Census of 1871 which stated Mayo 1819. How can I find the Parish?

I have tried the sites you mentioned but no results . I don't know what to do from here.

    Any further advise?

    Yours gratefully

    Margaret
