Hello,

We are in search of information concerning our Irish Ancestry:

GGrandmother is BRIDGET KEARNEY, born @ 1834.

GGrandfather is MICHAEL EARLY/EARLEY, born @1828.

We are not exactly sure where they came from, but have reason to believe that the area around LACKEN and KILLALA is  likely.

Both came to the U.S. during the famine @1847-1850. They married and settled in Pittston, Pennsylvania, USA. Then lived in Dunmore, Pennsylvania.

Other names possibly associated with our ancestors are: MARY NEWCOMB (likely the mother of one of our ggrandparents), CRAIG, LOFTUS, COOLICAN, LANGAN, GOLDEN, WALSH.

We are planning a trip to County Mayo this fall in early September. Help you might provide will be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Bemews,

this is your (American) Cousin John.  I'll see if I can find any more info - but hopefully someone else can add some more data as well.

  • Hi John!

Thanks for the response :) Hoping we both can both connect with some of our long lost Irish cousins here!

Maybe I should post in KILCUMMIN Community also....?

  • Bemews,

My name is Pete Rogan. I live in the US and have Kearney ancestors that are apparently from Killala. Nancy Kearney was married to James Rogan and they emigrated to the US (up state NY) in the 1830s. They went back to Ireland for a few years in the 1840s, then came back to the US and eventually settled in southern Wisconsin.

Nancy died in 1880 in Wisconsin. Her obituary says she was born in 1818 in the town of "Killaloe" in County "Mayor". We believe these are misprints, and that the obituary is referencing Killala in County Mayo. We have a name for Nancy's father - Patrick Kearney, but don't know anything more about him or the rest of the Kearneys. Perhaps somewhere in there Nancy and your Bridget are related?

Another connection worth noting is that some of the DNA matches we've found on the Rogan-Kearney side appear to have connections to Lacken Parish. We don't have an obituary or other document that lists where Nancy's husband James was born. But, our best guess based on the DNA matches is that he was from somewhere between Lacken and Killala.

We also have some DNA connections to some Coolicans, but no clear link via documented ancestors.

We'd love to connect and share notes - see if our research might help you zero in on Bridget. And I have to say I am jealous you'll be headed to that area in September. It should be a great trip!

If you'd like to connect and talk more, please contact me at rogan.pete@gmail.com.

I also hope that some contacts on the Ireland side of the IrelandXO site have some information for you!

    Thanks,

    -Pete
