Hello-

My paternal great grandfather, Michael Joseph Ginty was born in Ballina, Co. Mayo in about August 1868. He was one of 7 children born to Michael Ginty (born in County Mayo in about 1837) and Catherine Howley (born in Cuignane(?), North Mayo in about 1841). I believe Catherine was baptized in Knockmore Parish on about 12 Sept 1841. Her parents were Michael Howley (I believe born in Criggan, County Mayo) and Honor Jordan (or Jourdan - I believe born in Ballabain(?), County Mayo).

Michael and Catherine lived in the townland of Graghil, Parish of Kilcommon in about 1857 according to Griffith's Valuation 1848-1864. In 1871, he lived in Bradford, Yorkshire, England as a boarder (Catherine and their children likely stayed in Ireland while he went to work for the railroad in England) and in June 1877, Michael was killed in a railroad accident in Keighley, Yorkshire, England at age 40. Catherine and their 8 children were living in Keighley, Yorkshire in 1881, and the 1900 US Census indicates that she emigrated to the USA (I believe to Philadelphia, PA) in 1887. She lived in the Philadelphia area with different of her children from the time she emigrated until she died in 1902. She was buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Yeadon, Delaware County, PA.

My great grandfather Michael Ginty emigrated to the USA (Philadelphia) in about 1882 (or 1886, dates conflict in different US census documents) and married my great grandmother Mary Ann Moran in Philadelphia in 1888. They moved to Baltimore, Maryland in about 1892 (with two children) and had 4 more children (twins who died at birth or soon thereafter) and two other girls, my grandmother Honore Katherine Ginty being their youngest. Grandfather Ginty died in 1941 in Baltimore and Grandmother Ginty died in 1943, also in Baltimore.

  • Hi Amy,

I had a look on a site called rootsireland.ie. It is a pay-per-view site but I searched for Ginty (no first name) with parents Michael Ginty and Catherine Howley 1858 + / - 20 years and got 4 matches.

    I then searched 1888 + / - 20 and got another 2 matches.

I didn't have any luck with the How;eys though.

    Bets regards

  • Hi,

If you have ancestors from Ballina, you probably want to check out Kilmoremoy parish in both Mayo and Sligo.  I have seen a number of Jordans in Lacken / Kilcummin parish, but haven't seen your other names there.

You can also try familysearch.org, which is free:

    https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&countryId=1927084

I also always do a cursory search with Griffiths Valuation, which lists heads of house holds in Ireland from about 1847 - 1864:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

    I found this reference:
