My Grandfather James Walsh was born in Craggagh on 14th February 1875 and baptised in Kiltimagh Church on 18th February 1875.  I have a copy of his birth certificate and a photo of a page from a book at the Kiltimagh Parish Church which recorded his and his siblings baptism.

I would like to learn more about his parents Richard Walsh and Mary Walsh nee McNicholas.  Where they were born and where they married.

  • Hi Ann,

This would be great if we had the same great grandparents.  My grandfather had a brother Thomas who was either born or baptised on 24.12.1875.  My records show that our Thomas married Molly Ruane and had one child Mary Kathleen.  Molly died and he remarried Annie Burke and had two children Richard and James. Does this fit in with your grandfather?  My grandfather James was born in 1875 and married Mary Byrne in Manchester.

I have been unable to learn anything about my great-grandparents such as their birth dates, when and where they were married or when they died.  Recently I was looking through a small note book that had belonged to my father and right at the back he had recorded ' Grandma's Anniversary 26/8/28 been dead three years.'  As I already have the death certificate of his mother's mother then this must refer to his father's mother Mary Walsh nee McNicholas. I have asked my daughter, Moira, who has just moved back to Co.Clare to contact BDM in Co Mayo and find out what she can.

There were about 16 in my grandfather's family with some dying in infancy.  Some years ago I visited Ireland with an aunt and we met Mary Frances Walsh, daughter of grandfather's brother Michael. Then later I met up with Jerry Walsh from The Raftery Rooms in Kiltimagh (no relation) who had been a life long friend of John Joseph Walsh, one time Coroner for East Mayo.  John Joseph was the son of grand-dad's brother  Richard.

I hope this bit of family history fits in with your family.  Looking forward to hearing back from you.
