I am researching McHales from the Kilmeena, Burrishoole, Mayo area.  In the Tithe Applotment Books recently made available on-line ( http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp ) the only McHale I find in that vicinity as of 1833 is a John McHale on the island of Roslynagh - which is somewhat further north.  In Griffiths Valuation roughly a generation later there are several McHale households in the townlands of Rosmoney, Rosmindle and one in Moyna.

In the early 1840's a group of men, seeming to be brothers, baptized children in the Pollnarooma, Rahoon, Galway. They were, with spouses:

Patrick McHale (1816-1880) - Mary Allen (1824-1913)
John McHale (1821-1885) - Mary McNally (1825-1899)
James McHale - Mary Moran
Richard McHale - Mary Costello

Patrick and John's families and at least one daughter of James, emigrated to New Brunswick. John eventually made his way to Hubbard, Trumbull County, Ohio where he died.  His tombstone indicates that he was from Kilmeena, Mayo, Ireland.  That is what places all of the brothers from that area (in my understanding).

My family descends from Patrick McHale and Mary Allen.  She was originally from Aucloggeen, Annaghdown, Galway.

Any information about any of these individuals or possible family connections in Mayo would be very helpful.

  • Hi

Just looking through the above I think that the McHales you mention were from the Newport/Mulranny area.

This link in the Census shows many of the townlands on the Tithes which appear to be adjacent to Roslynagh

Hope you can access this link, someone has taken a photograph of Roslynagh, it appears to be just behind the Cemetery at Burrishoole Abbey, its possible that the McHales may be buried somewhere here.  (Scroll to Day 84 & 86)

Here is a good website for the Newport Area, you might find something here.
