Can anyone help with info on my great grandma Esther Manley. On the 1911 English census she gives her birthplace as Ballina.

Her birthdate is approximately 1868 -1876 due to inaccuracies on the cenus and she was living in Liverpool in 1900 when she had my grandma.

She never married although she took her partner's name (Hockley) and I think she was C of E.

Thanks for any help you can give me with finding more about the Manley side of our family.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your message.

Have you tried looking in to Church records for information on the Manley family? : Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records.  Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ ) and others are in the Representative Church Body Library (http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 ) in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. The Anglican Record Project is has created an index to their records: http://ireland.anglican.org/cmsfiles/pdf/AboutUs/library/AngRecord/bunclodyunionindex.pdf

You could also try looking for the family in Griffith?s Valuation. This was a property survey carried out in Ireland between 1848 and 1864. You can search this here:

You may also be able to find a record of any family that may have remained in Ireland in the 1901 and 1911 census records. These can give lots of useful information. You can search these here:

  • A bit more details - Kilmoremoy straddled both Mayo and Sligo, so you want to keep that in mind.  I did find this record of a Mary Manley on Griffiths, from about 1856:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/details.xml?action=sho…

but I didn't find any in Kilmoremoy in Sligo.

You might have better luck searching on familysearch.org, see https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&countryId=1927084

  • An autosomal dna test will really help you find cousins.  You can upload your results (free!) from any testing service to GedMatch.com where they will tell you how many gen. back to your ICW (ancestor in common with someone).  My g'g'grandmother was Catherine MANLEY, which is spelled various ways which doesn't matter, but mostly MUNNELLY.  She was b 1808 and we believe the family lived in Moygownagh Parish and Ballina.  I have dna matches to others from there who emigrated to Scranton PA area, and to some who lived in Belmullet (west) who emigrated to Ontario Canada then NY State, and Muingrevagh (northwest) of Ballina who emigrated to MA, and others from ? in Mayo to England. It is spelled various ways in the same family. Of my matches some married MCNAMARA, FOY, HIGGINS, WALSH, GALLAGHER, MCHALE, KELLY, WARD, MCALPINE, BARRETT.  These are just from my matches. My branch went to Lake and Cook counties IL, USA 1848-49.
