Hello

I am looking for descendants of JAMES HIGGINS born about 1837 and his wife BRIDGET GRIFFIN born about 1846. They are living at Uggool, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo in 1901.

In 1911 it appears JAMES HIGGINS has died (possibly in 1908 in Castlebar) and Bridget is still living in Uggool (House 2) with daughter Kate and 7 year old Grandson JOHN HIGGINS who was born in England living with her.

I think that this 7 year old Grandson JOHN HIGGINS is my Dad's brother who is missing from the 1911 UK Census of Toxteth, Liverpool.

My Dad's father was JAMES HIGGINS who was born about 1871 in County Mayo to JAMES HIGGINS (a Farmer). James left County Mayo prior to 1901 and was living in Prescot, Lancashire in 1901 and from 1905 lived in Liverpool.

In 1901 Irish Census there was a PATRICK HIGGINS with wife MARY GARA living nxt door to JAMES HIGGINS and BRIDGET (Griffin) Higgins and I think they may be brothers.

Does anyone know anything about these families.

Both families used Kilmovee RC Church for Marriages and Baptisms.

Thanks

  • Hello Dympna

I have looked at those web addresses you gave me. I had already downloaded the grave for James Higgins died 1951 wife Ellen and son James a few weeks ago and I wrote to the owner of the website asking for more information on that family.

I would like to know if the James Higgins who died in 1951 was the son of Patrick Higgins and Katie Duffy. This James was born in 1905/1906 and in 1911 he was living in Uggool next to Bridget Higgins who I think may be my Great Grandmother. Patrick Higgins was her son and he was with Bridget & his father James in the 1901 Census in Uggool.

How can I find out more information on the family in the Grave 338

    Thanks

  • Hello My Family is the Griffins, O'Donnells and Higgins from Cloonamana and Uggool. My Records Michael Griffin was mt ggGrand father and his father was Phillip. We are all from The Kilmovee parrish and the old cemetery near Roscommon. Michaels son Thomas came to Philadelphia, USA in 1892, I know that some Higgins came to America and will search further. Thomas Griffin married Honora Dolan of Cashel, Islandeady.

  • Hello Rich

Thank you for replying to my message. I know for sure that my Grandfather was JAMES HIGGINS and he was born around 1871. His father was also JAMES HIGGINS and was a Farmer in County Mayo. My Grandfather JAMES HIGGINS went to Prescot, Lancashire before 1901 as he was listed on the 1901 UK Census living at 14 Tea Street, Prescot which was the Shamrock Tavern. Widow Mary Ellen Comer (nee Donnelly) was the Beerhouse Keeper there. They married in Prescot in 1902 at Our Lady Immaculate & St Joseph RC Church in Prescot, Lancashire. The wiotnesses were PATRICK O'DONNELL and CATHERINE ROONEY.

I have spent the last couple of years going through all the JAMES HIGGINS in County Mayo who had a son James but who was not listed on the 1901 or 1911 Irish Census's as I knew my JAMES HIGGINS was in Prescot in 1901 anmd Toxteth Park, Liverpool in 1911.

The most obvious JAMES HIGGINS (aged 60) is the one who is living at House 36 House Uggool, Kilmovee in 1901 with wife BRIDGET (who I found to be BRIDGET GRIFFIN).

Living next door at House 38 Uggool is PATRICK HIGGINS (aged 70) and wife MARY GARA.

Also living in House 32 Uggool, Kilmovee is JAMES O'DONNELL and wife MARGARET GARA. They had a son PATRICK O'DONNELL baptised in Kilmovee RC Church on 23 August 1879 and I have found that he went to live in St Helens, Lancashire and married ELLEN GRAY in 1909. PATRICK was a Coal Miner as was my Grandfather JAMES HIGGINS when he married in 1902. St Helens is not far from Prescot and I think this PATRICK O'DONNELL is probably the PATRICK O'DONNELL who was the witness at my Grandfather's Marriage.

There is another JAMES HIGGINS (aged 50) living at House 34 with wife MARY HARKEN

I have been unable to check on the GRIFFIN's as the name of BRIDGET GRIFFIN's father was not mentioned on their marriage record which was in 1857.

From Baptism records of JAMES HIGGINS & BRIDGET GRIFFIN's children I found GRIFFIN Godparents. The names of these were;-  ANNA GRIFFIN, JAMES GRIFFIN, MARY GRIFFIN, WINIFRED GRIFFIN, PATRICK GRIFFIN

Do these HIGGINS, GRIFFIN & O'DONNELL's connect with yours.

    Regards

  • Hello Dympna

I have just replied to your message on Facebook-Mayo Genealogy Group where you were asking for help in finding descendants of HIGGINS from Uggool. There is a reply to your message by Lisacul Rosie. I recently joined the Mayo Genealogy Group on Facebook and I am currently being helped to find my Higgins's by two ladies on the site.

I have now found that the Grave of James Higgins who died in 1951 that you told me about was the son of James Higgins and Mary Harkin of Uggool. He is buried with his wife Ellen and son James who died in 2007.

There are 2 JAMES HIGGINS and 1 PATRICK HIGGINS in Uggool in 1901. There is JAMES HIGGINS & BRIDGET GRIFFIN and JAMES HIGGINS & MARY HARKIN. PATRICK HIGGINS is married to MARY GARA.

I think that JAMES O'DONNELL & MARGARET GARA also of Uggool are related to at least PATRICK HIGGINS and MARY GARA.

JAMES O'DONNELL had a son Patrick born in 1879 who went to St Helens, Lancashire, England and married ELLEN GRAY there in 1909.

I think my Grandfather may be the son JAMES born 1871 of JAMES HIGGINS and BRIDGET GRIFFIN. My Grandfather JAMES HIGGINS went to Prescot, Lancashire which is near St Helens and he was there in 1901. He married in 1902 in Prescot and one of the Witnesses was a PATRICK O'DONNELL.

In 1911 my Grandfather is living in Toxteth, Liverpool, England and his son JOHN HIGGINS born 1903 in Prescot is missing from the family. In 1911 in Uggool, BRIDGET HIGGINS is a Widow and she has a Grandson JOHN HIGGINS aged 7 yrs born in England living with her. I think that John may be my Uncle John (who was born in 1903 in Prescot)

    Thanks for your past help

    Regards

  • Hello Rich   (SimpsonGriffin)

Are you still on this Forum?

I think the Higgins & Griffin who are yours may also be mine.

James Higgins & Bridget Griffin's first daughter Mary was born in 1858 in Cloonamna.
