Hi,

Hoping someone could help me please. I am trying to trace Mary Reynolds who lived in Urlaur at the time of the 1901 (aged 5) and 1911(aged 15). Her father was Michael Reynolds. This Mary Reynolds that I am seeking may have spent some time near Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon and later in Dublin. She possibly married a John Burke.

Any help in tracing this family would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Ann Marie Fair

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

  • Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

The Mary Reynolds I am seeking gave birth to a baby girl in a Dublin workhouse in July 1921. This child was fostered out to a family in Athlone.  On the records she stated that she was 25, that her father's name was Michael and that she was from Robinhood. She also mentioned that she was married to a John Burke who was interned in Spike Island at the time of the birth (1921). This is the only information I have to go on.

I had checked all marriages for a Mary Reynolds with the GRO and found no record of one to a John Burke. I spent a few months checking all records for the Robinhood area of Clondalkin, west of Dublin but she did not came from there. I moved my search to Robinhood (a townland in Roscommon near Ballinlough also known as Cloonlish). I have been able to eliminate the only Mary Reynolds who fitted the profile from near this area. She had emmigrated to the US in May 1921.

It was suggested to me that perhaps my Mary Reynolds was from a different area but worked in one of the 'Big Houses' in Robinhood. I am currently checking all Mary Reynolds whose father was Michael and would fit the age profile.

On the 1901 and 1911 census, there is a Mary Reynolds fitting the description living with her family in Barcull, Urlaur, Co. Mayo and as it is close to the Roscommon border I thought it would be worth checking to see if anyone local would know the history of this family.

Thanks you for all your assistance,

    Ann Marie
