Looking for any information to get me closer to finding records and geography for:

John MAGINN, born about 1830 in Mayo, Ireland.

John Maginn married Margaret SHEA, who was born about  1829, in Mayo Ireland.

At some time before before 1855 they emigrated to Canada.

Also:

Joseph Smith Bailie, son of Adam Bailie and Eliza Anderson, was born Jan 3, 1851 in Mayo Ireland.  He married Margaret George who was born Oct. 19, 1854 in Rivory, County Cavan.

I would very much like to find enough information to obtain copies of records and to locate on a map so I can come to Ireland and see where my ancestors lived.

Any guidance/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.comHeadstone of Joseph Smith Bailie - born in Mayo, Ireland; buried in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Please help me find his roots.

  • Hi there,

Mayo is a big county, so it would help enormously if you had some idea of a more precise location. You could check for Joseph Smith Bailie on the census records for 1901/1911 if you thought he still lived here. This can be checked here:http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

When you research the Shea, make sure you also check O'Shea, as this is a more common name here.

Do you know what religion they were? Once I know which area of Mayo they were from, I could then guide you to the church records you need. In the meantime, you could also try checking the General Register Office (GRO) for civil registration records (these only start from 1864 however): http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

I found this about Rivory, but perhaps someone in the local area can recommend more websites for you to check.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
