I am not on Facebook but in googling Gurtane, Oughaval, I saw a partial post from someone who was said Stephen was their great grandfather.

He is the brother of my great grandfather, John Keane 1866. I am interested in any more information. Thank you, Cynthia

  • possible family for this Stephen and John ?

John 'Cane' born 26th February 1864 at Attyersih townland (Attireesh)  - parents Michael 'Cane' & Bridget Bermingham (see entry 27)

Stephen 'Caine' born 1st February 1877 at Gortaroe townland - parents Michael 'Cane' & Bridget Bermingham (see entry 402)

Michael is shown as a farmer on both these births.

Both Attireesh and Gortaroe townlands are in Oughaval/Aughaval civil parish, both these townlands are on the outskirts of Westport town, which is also in this parish.

A search of civil records shows a number of possible siblings to John and Stephen - e.g. Patrick 1866*, Patrick 1869, & Michael 1874

    * the first Patrick likely died young, and the name was reused

  • completely forgot to mention - spelling of surnames (and placenames) showed a great deal of variations, so for Keane you meed to also check a range of other possible spellings, in this case  -  Cane, Cain, Caine, Kaine, Kean, O'Kane etc and the surname Bermingham might appear as Birmingham, Brimagem, Brimigan etc (src : J. Grenham)
